Toasters – Balmuda, Mitsubishi, others

For those who have used these or others (Iris Ohyama, Muji, Zojirushi, etc.) which would you recommend?

  1. Bruno Steam & Bake oven.
Not outrageously overpriced, comes with convection mode as well as normal and steam (to revive stale bread)modes and it includes the tray and grill base. They also make nice ceramic dishes to match it that are made to fit the oven, and are good for baking everything. If you’re cooking for 1-2 people the size is great.

  2. Based on user experiences and reviews, Balmuda and Zojirushi toasters are often recommended for their performance and quality.

  3. I have a cheap toaster I’ve used daily for more years than I can remember. I don’t even think I have the manual/warranty, which is saying something for me.

  4. I have balmuda for some years now and is pretty good. Both side of the bread perfect. Also for making some small food

  5. I’ve got the balmuda one and it’s amazing, totally recommend. The water feature really brings old breads back to life. Can’t go back to classic toasters.

  6. I received an Aladdin toaster as a gift and have been very happy with it’s performance.

  7. Iris Oyama is probably the cheapest, might not last as long as Muji or Zojirushi. Those two are solid.

  8. The Zojirushi toaster oven that Obaachan bought us about a decade ago still works. It’s a brown one. Maybe get one of those.

  9. I have an Iris Oyama that I bought for about 3.000 yen half a decade ago. I’ve baked breads, cakes, roasted meats and cooked a whole chicken in it. It has temp control and a couple of settings. It’s no oven, but it’s done the job

  10. Balmuda is amazing…while it works. At the 2-year mark they always start to have issues. Mine will sometimes cut off in the middle of a toasting session, or randomly beep during the day.

  11. We have the far-IR heater Panasonic and it works great. We also use the mode for re-heating fried foods often, it works well.

  12. Always been curious about the Balmuda brand in general. Is it a Japanese company? Do they just stamp their name on OEM products? Is it high end? Always liked the design but wasn’t sure if the quality came with it. (Sorry obviously not an answer)

  13. I picked up a Toshiba oven/toaster combo (2018 model) for just over 3,000 yen on Mercari used (shipping included). Spent a few hours cleaning it, pretty much good as new.

For comparison, the “brand new model” (pretty much the exact same product, hardly any changes, you’re not fooling anyone Hitachi) in Bic Camera costs sbout 30,000 yen.

I wouldn’t bother buying brand new unless you have something against buying used.

  14. Depends what you want to toast tbh.
If you are toasting normal bread then you should be ok with most.

We have two. Muji and a really old one, brand is Sanor’e, I think.

Both have the same issue. Croissants and rolls are too close to the heating elements and end up burning.

Muji is stylish, small footprint but burns larger items. I’m not sure about the other brands on your list.

  15. The basic Panasonic is my all-time favorite: no digital anything, 2 temperature settings (always set to max) and a rotary timer that rings a bell. Built for Life.

  16. I like my zojirushi toaster a lot. It handles baking really well too. I’ve even made cookies before 🙂

  17. We had a Tiger toaster which was terrible. If you cooked 2 slices at the same time, it only toasted half the bread and after using it, you had to wait a while for it to cook down before using it again. I bought the Instant multi toaster from Costco and it’s really good and very fast.
