how can I use conversation lessons to benefit me?

I went through genki 1 and a bit of genki 2 with a teacher but switched to the immersion and sentence mining route which I prefer now. I just reached knowing 2k words. Plan on visiting Japan next year. I have spare money for 1 or 2 conversation lessons a week. How could I use them to improve my japanese if I decide to take them?

  1. Just talk. If you’re using the same teacher/tutor, have them run through the chapters and also train for survival situations.

  2. I recommend preply because some tutors are like $5/lesson and they can be quality. I was using it for Spanish and the guy went to school for teach Spanish to foreigners and I lucked out.

  3. Do some homework before the lesson. Pick a topic (e.g. ordering something at a restaurant) and come up with lists of sentences and phrases thar you’re apt to say or hear. Ask the teacher to check whether the stuff you looked up is ok. You can even assemble a mock script.

You can also ask about topics like expressing desires, recounting anecdotes, apologizing, asking a favor, asking someone to do something together, talking about counterfactual situations, hypothesizing, etc.
