In-house corporate language teacher position?

I’m tired of working dispatch and am looking for a position working directly for a Japanese corporation as an English language trainer. I’ve been searching both online and asking around within my circle of personal contacts, but haven’t gotten any leads as of yet.

I have been told that there are Japanese companies who do hire for such positions, but no one seems to know which ones, or how to make contacts that would lead to such a job.

My question is, has anyone here ever worked in such a position, and if so, how did you get the job? Did you like it? What was your pay rate?

And, if you have any suggestions or leads, feel free to send me a PM.

In case it’s important, I have formal teaching qualifications (Delta, MATESOL) and several years of experience teaching business English via dispatch companies. I’m knowledgeable in terms of ESL and ESP methodology, so I’m well-qualified for such a position.

  1. There have been a few that have been passed around by people in my friend group. I never took any of that work myself. I think that you’ll be hard pressed to land one without a recommendation from a friend who decided to move onto something else. You did the right thing by asking around. You never know who might reach out to you in a few months and say something has come up.

The next thing to do might be to work for some of these dispatch companies that handle short term contracts for business clients. The client might like you and offer you something more permanent.

  2. from my experience these kind of gigs are always through someone who knows someone. Thats why networking i always important, even for English teachers.

  3. My company does this. For the most part it’s on who you know. People tend to bring in or pass down the job to their old college friends or someone they know. It’s not like there will be a team of English teachers. Usually one or two assigned to a single “site”. In my company each site has a teacher of their own and they manage three curriculums based on student needs (e.g., business English, general English, writing/composition). Pay is almost entirely dependent on the person’s experience, how long they plan on pursuing such a career, and if they are able to lead and manage their own program or if they will be the support to the lead teacher on site.

I’m not sure what else to add. But it’s just boil down to getting to know a lot of people and getting your name out there.

  4. My impression is that this kind of job is much less common than it was in the past. Companies outsource this now, or pay for their employees to get outside training.

  5. I’ve worked directly for companies before from people I knew.. the husband of a student etc.. not easy to find I think you have a better of finding a full time position through a teaching company they tend to be better paid..

You could also try sending your resume to a 100 large businesses in your area.. maybe you’ll get lucky ..
