What hiragana / katakana character is this? Never seen it before

These are screenshots of spoiler-free parts from a One Piece chapter (1044), with background text that represents sounds happening the scene. I cannot understand what the first character shown is. I cannot find it online and OCR tools do not recognize it.
My best bet is that it is another style for writing わ , or is it something else, like a rarely used character like ゑ ?

  1. It’s just a slightly sloppy わ.

    It’s not another writing style. The curved part is just slightly to the left of the straight vertical stroke.

  2. My language exchange partner writes わ, ね, and れ this way too, and I’ve been copying it ever since. It’s easier than writing it normally which always turns out uglyyy.
