Is there an informal speech to formal speech Japanese translator?

Like for example, there’s some informal Japanese thats hard to translate, so you’d put it in the translator and it would make it more formal easy to understand Japanese?

  1. No, probably not. I would say that’s a good idea but it’s probably easier just to start learning more informal language patterns.

  3. There’s no binary formality. In Japanese there are degrees of formality and you also must take into account the relative social status of the speaker, listen and subjects. Since none of this information is available in informal Japanese there is no way to make the correct word choices to make it formal.

    Also people, even young native speakers, are usually really bad at using formal Japanese. Informal is so much easier to understand. (Read about バイト敬語 for more info.)

  4. Formal Japanese is not easier to understand than casual Japanese. Formal Japanese (keigo) is almost like an entire new language with its own set of vocab, grammar patterns and rules. Even many native Japanese people struggle a lot with formal Japanese. To the point that there is a “translator” for keigo. Type in standard Japanese and it puts out the keigo version. I’ve found it very helpful in writing business emails and such. It’s not going to make things easier to understand though.
