Hey! I will be going on a 2.5 month internship at Kyoto University in Kyoto this summer. I want to travel to Tokyo ~4 times during the span of the trip. I also want to visit cities around Kyoto (Osaka, Kobe, etc.). And if possible I would love to be able to travel to the northern and southern tips of the island.
Because this is an internship, my visa status is not “sightseeing”. So I can’t get the Rail Pass.
Is there some other pass, probably aimed at the japanese market, that could still fulfill my needs?
Thanks!

You can’t get the national pass, but there are regional passes you could look at. For example: https://www.westjr.co.jp/global/en/ticket/pass/
If you don’t mind taking a very long time to travel there is also the youthful 18 ticket book. It gives you 5 one day local passes for JR trains – https://www.jreast.co.jp/multi/pass/seishun18.html
Keep in mind though that you’re describing a ton of traveling and if you’re here on a summer internship I would expect that to occupy most of your time.
