Just got the email from Rakuten.
I doubt anybody on this fair planet even owns a PayPay credit card, and so for the rest of us, well we won’t be able to use our linked Rakuten/Amazon/etc. credit cards with PayPay any more as of August 1.
So that means (I guess) linking directly to your bank account for direct debit, and no points accumulation (outside of PayPay itself I guess).
Nice one, PayPay.

Softbank move
>I doubt anybody on this fair planet even owns a PayPay credit card
I have one, linked to my paypay
hook, line and sinker.
start service at a loss with a bunch of coupons, gather a fairly wide user base, then kill off coupons/deals, then make it annoying/difficult to use.

I do. The way it works is that your payments use your line of credit directly, when you have post-pay enabled in the app. In a sense, the card is just a “back-up” for places that don’t accept PayPay.
Ah the classic “[Embrace, extend, and extinguish](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish)”
For a country with so much cash usage on daily basis, there are too many services that offers payments like paypay.
I hope this move backfires for them. I have enjoyed using PayPay but will not continue after this change, I genuinely prefer to go back to using cash than to be forced to get their credit card.
Damn , the only reason I use PayPay is because is linked to my Rakuten bank credit card. Btw I can not charge with my Rakuten bank…
As long as direct debit from bank accounts is fine it’s OK for me
I was never able to link my Rakuten card to paypay, I dont know you guys were able to lol, maybe I tried to late and that change was already in place but only for new accounts.
Least assholey Softbank corpo decision
Are people who use matomete Shiharai on SoftBank or Ymobile and pay with credit card still in the clear?
I don’t use paypay that often so ehh.
But that makes me think, why don’t people just use the card itself to shop rather than using it to charge paypay… which then is used to shop? For example what I use on a daily basis is iD (SMBC debit card), set up in Google Wallet- then hold my phone on the reader like suica/pasmo.
So I’ll stop using paypay
Actually getting paypay card / paylater is the most convenient way to do transaction compared to using third party credit card or manual deposit.
I have been using paypay to pay the utility bill which require me to top up my balance. With paypay card I can top up required amount only and pay my bill.
PayPay was so good when it started, just cashback on everything lol. Then they started adjusting the levels to get the higher cashback, then lowered the max, then stopped cashback on utilities… Pretty sucky now.
Well, we won’t be using PayPay anymore then haha
> So that means (I guess) linking directly to your bank account for direct debit
Nope. Means “don’t let the door hit your ass on the way out, PayPay…”
I only use PayPay to spend the money I make from my Yahoo auctions sales, so I don’t really care.
Are we still going to be able to pay PayPay with Linepay? If so, then that doesn’t change anything for me.
Ehhh, fuck em. I used it to pay back friends for dinner, make purchases at places that don’t have contactless, but that’s about it. I don’t mind loading 1 man in at an ATM at the start of the month, and it usually lasts with how little I use it.
For everything else, Google Pay? Wallet? Is so much easier. Copy your credit/debit card details across, and just tap to pay as if you were using your real card. Was never up for fucking around with getting QR codes scanned. Felt like an extra needless hurdle.
it’s ok will switch to d払い
This was also mentioned in a post about a month ago:
https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/1359579/paypay_to_stop_accepting_outside_credit_cards/
I use PayLater/PP Card, it’s decently convenient, and gets you points. Was thinking about getting the gold card as points can be quite good there too.
I was never able to use my credit card via PayPay anyway. It was fully authenticated, but just came up as an option when paying electric bills or sending money to an individual. Maybe if I’d used it at a store, but no point in that since the CC itself is easier to tap.
That’s why I still use cash for most stuff.
If the laughable IT security doesn’t screw you, the company will eventually.
I’ve actually never used PayPay. I just use Apple Pay connected with my Visa/Mastercard. Are there any benefits to using their service?
Mobile Suica is better if it gets adopted more. Touch the phone and peace out, plus sometimes easier to claim as a ‘travel expense’
Yeah… If only they didn’t immediately refuse my credit card application without any reason lol.
Oh well, it was only useful when I went to an onsen that only accepts PayPay as a cashless option; my Rakuten was linked to it. There are no significant changes. PayPay’s quite a big user base, but luckily they don’t have the monopoly.
their loss, not mine
PayPay is, and has always been, trash
This just means that any shops that accept only cash and Paypay are effectively cash-only now (to me).
This will totally backfire when a bunch of tourists can’t pay for stuff with PayPay anymore…
I support anything that means the death of any payment method that uses QR codes instead of simple touch-to-pay.
Rakuten Pay has been superior from the start. If you’ve got a Rakuten credit card (as I would guess most foreigners with a credit card do) the points stack fast, and anywhere you can use it, you can pay with points (even if you couldn’t pay with Rakuten points normally).
I get tons of points through promos and work so that alone saves me several thousand yen a month. PLUS just having Rakuten Pay installed and using it gives you point bonuses too. Best thing is Rakuten actually makes a profit through their credit cards, marketplaces so it’ll probably continue to be available to everyone long term lol
And I hate that little fuckin’ noise that PayPay makes.
Plenty of options outside Paypay if you live in big city and only go to supermarket and chain restaurants. In the medium countryside eatery, paypay is the dominant aside cash. There is this town in Ibaraki surprised me with their cashless adoption as I don’t carry cash around. Paypay intention from the beginning is to pull in these countrysides in their ecosystem
Well, I just started to use it. Now I won’t use it again.
I stayed away as the name PayPay just irritates me
Oh what the fuck will I ever do now? I guess my only options are ID, rakuten pay, edy, suica, credit cards, debit cards, nanaco, PASMO, and cash. Man, they’ve really got us backed into a corner..
>I doubt anybody on this fair planet even owns a PayPay credit card
PayPay credit card is simply Yahoo Japan (JY) credit card, rebranded.
So a ton of Japanese have them due to the various Yahoo Japan properties.
Foreigners in Japan, maybe not as much.
Nice – I got denied by PayPay for a credit card, guess who’s not going to use their services anymore.
I have zero loyalty to PayPay or any QR payments. Bad user experience, limited to Japan, aggressive and cheap…ass techniques to grab customers over the years. No thanks…..
Well that sucks if it turns out true for my card. Guess I won’t be using them much now
Man I’m so glad I never used PayPay. I have a visceral hatred for how lazy it is.
i have it linked to my bank account so i’ll keep on keeping on
Hooray for one less app I need to think about
> I doubt anybody on this fair planet even owns a PayPay credit card
I got one last month after this change was announced. Super simple!
> so for the rest of us, well we won’t be able to use our linked Rakuten/Amazon/etc. credit cards with PayPay any more as of August 1.
You can use Rakuten Pay with non-Rakuten branded cards. So you can basically migrate.
FWIW the PayPay card has the same billing and withdrawal cycle as Rakuten so it’s not so hard to add a second credit card.
I had problems getting started with PayPay a few years back, so I just blew it off. Got other payment options available. Glad I never bothered with PayPay.
So far I’ve only charged my paypay with cash anyway.
