Info about selling online and tax

Hello!

i have some stuff to sell on mercari or yahoo, and i’m wondering if i need to pay tax or declare it ( we are talking about 20.000 dollar or more.. )

UPDATE :

let’s suppose i say i got it for 1.000 dollar, and then sold on mercari for 1.200, how they know that i really i paid it 1.000? it’s not trackable online..

must i declare it?

  1. IIRC you only need to pay tax on miscellaneous income once it exceeds 200,000 yen.

  2. You need to declare if it’s over 200,000 per year, and you need to have a proper visa that allows you to do this kind of stuff. (E.g: long-term, spouse, PR)

You need to register as kojin jigyou (self-employed) and pay taxes on it.

A very simple advice, don’t try to fuck up with the tax bureau of any country or hide anything. If they want to track down stuff, they have all the needed tools to track down stuff. If you purchased your thing online, then it means you made a bank transfer, or a credit card payment. Both are super easy to retrieve, both for you and them. The tax bureau will not ask anything, until it gets some interest in your case, and at that time you better have a good story to tell. 20000 dollars can raise flags…

  4. I’m very ignorant on tax issues, but when you list something as “new” in Yahoo Auctions, they charge a sales tax to that sale (on top of the items price), and you won’t get that money. So perhaps you don’t really have to do anything?
