  1. What?? The LDP’s wins in the election didn’t trigger a massive surge of confidence in the Japanese economy and buying of the Yen while it is at record lows?

  2. I feel for anyone earning yen right now trying to save or pay off debts in the US. I remember feeling bad when it went from 80 yen to 110 yen back in 2013 and 2014. That’s the good old days now.

  3. Japan won’t be able to afford iPhones soon

Edit: Did I offend some of you by making a comment about Apple’s recent 20% price hike in Japan? Or do you have no idea about anything in Japan and just defend it blindly

  4. BOJ will not be raising interest rates for as long as Kuroda is in power and consumer price YoY is less than 5-6%, realistically speaking. And by the time Kuroda retires next year, inflation will likely be subdued.

  5. I really timed my study abroad poorly! I had a $7500 USD scholarship to fund my academic year in Japan in 2010-2011 😭

  6. As an American, this is a great time to import anime figures. So that’s cool I guess.

  7. As the article mentions, the US is hiking interest rates. That’s causing the US dollar to strengthen.

Euro is also weakening compared to the dollar.

This is less about the health of the japanese economy than it is steps taken by the US (of course, a healthier JP economy would probably be free to do similar interest rate hikes though I’m unsure how that would work with the debt burden).

  8. Exports $728.931 billion (2021)

    Transport Equipment 21.0%

    Machinery 19.9%

    Electrical Machinery 18.7%

    Chemicals 12.4%

    Manufactured Goods 10.4%

    Materials 1.7%

    Foodstuff 1.3%

    Mineral Fuels 0.8%

    Others 13.8%

    Imports $742.094 billion (2021)

    Electrical Machinery 17.6%

    Mineral Fuels 16.6%

    Machinery 10.5%

    Foodstuff 9.9%

    Chemicals 9.9%

    Manufactured Goods 9.3%

    Raw Materials 6.9%

    Transport Equipment 5.0%

    Others 14.4%

Japan’s import is ~15 billion USD larger than the export.

  9. At this point the airplane to the US is the least worrying financial aspect of my upcoming trip.

  10. Why does the US dollar seems to be increasing in value against most currencies?

  11. Took advantage of it today by liquidating some USDT to yen to pay ahead in rent.

  12. Being paid in USD while living in Japan has been financially great for me recently.
