Dual Citizenship Question

I’m 24 and was born a dual citizen to the US and Japan. I live in the USA and never renounced or declared my Japanese citizenship. I have recently found out that most people just claim they will renounce their US citizenship and this satisfies the Japanese government. I had a couple of questions I was wondering about.

How did the process of renewing your passport go? My Japanese passport expired a long time ago when I was a kid and was wondering how that process went.

I recently went and visited Japan with my US Passport, is there an issue with this if I wanted to get a Japanese passport again?

How does moving to Japan work in this case? Can I just move to Japan with my Japanese passport without any issues?

If I wanted to pursue a teaching job in the public school system or entered a Japanese college, would this be an issue since I’m “endeavoring” to renew my US citizenship?

  2. er, relevant law is [https://www.moj.go.jp/ENGLISH/information/tnl-01.html](https://www.moj.go.jp/ENGLISH/information/tnl-01.html)

What you’re saying is a bit jumbled on several points.

    1. by “renounced or declared” , the it’s Article 14 here and there’s a procedure for declaring you want to be Japanese to the MOJ.
    2. If you declare for Japanese, then when you renew your Japanese passport, you agree to endeavor to get rid of your other citizenships.
    3. The current understanding of endeavor used by the government of Japan does not require success in the endeavor.
    4. You shouldn’t enter Japan under a foreign passport if you’re a citizen. — this is a basic rule of all countries — in general, however, there are no major consequences.

If you have a Japanese passport, you can just board an international flight to Japan with it and land in Japan like any other citizen.

There are no issues with Japanese citizens who are also citizens of other countries attending Japanese universities or becoming schoolteachers. Politicians, however, have to actually get rid of other citizenships.

to get a new Japanese passport would involve contacting the local consulate and probably giving them a copy of your koseki.
