Tokyo itinerary check – family friendly travel

Hello! Itinerary check for an October trip to Tokyo with 2 adults and a 10 year old. We are staying at an apartment hotel with a full kitchen and fridge in asakusa so all breakfasts and some other meals will primarily be in the room to provide a rest (and because my kid is a picky eater). The adults have been to Tokyo before and have done a lot in shinjuku/shibuya and have already seen lots of temples and historical sites there. This trip is more focused on family activities and brings the three of us will all enjoy. It’s also my 10 year olds first international trip. We are interested in animals, pokemon, amusement/theme parks, fun and games, and history. My main questions are whether this is overly ambitious, or whether things may be arranged in a way that do not make sense transportation/efficiency wise. Thanks in advance for any input.

Friday
-Arrive at airport at 3:00PM
-Get to Hotel, grocery store, walk around a bit and go to bed.

Saturday
-Visit Sensoji Temple, shops and area
-MameShiba Caf̩ Asakusa (I know reviews say the dogs only hang with the regulars but we would be happy just to watch them Рwe just love Shiba Inus)
-Head back to hotel for lunch in room
-Walk to Asakusa Rox for Arcades and batting cages
-Dinner at Local restaurant or 7-11 meal in room

Sunday
-Pokemon Café Ginza Brunch (If I can get reservations) and Pokemon Center
-Go straight to Akihabara
-Akihabara Arcades and Owl Café
-Back to hotel for dinner in room
-Asakusa Hanyashiki amusement park at night

Monday (Sports Day)
-Hike Mount Takao (will it be too crowded on Sports day?)

Tuesday
-Ikebukuro Sunshine City Pokemon Mega Store, Pokemon Go area, Gachapon store
-Head back to Asakusa hotel for lunch/rest in room
-Tokyo Skytree
-Possibly back to Asakusa Rox Arcades
-Dinner at Local restaurant or 7-11 meal in room

Wednesday
-Send Luggage to Disneyland Hotel.
-Pack daypacks with one change of clothes and toiletries for next day.
-Go to Teamlab Planets in the morning
-Check into TDL hotel at 4:30.
-Buy TDL evening weeknight pass.
-Eat in park and maybe see parade

Thursday
-Disney Sea all day

Friday
-Early entry at TDL
-Ride 3 rides we do not have in USA
-Be on airport limo bus by 2PM at the latest to head to airport for 5PM flight home

Some other things I’d like to fit in if any of the above aren’t a good idea include Toyosu fish market, ninja cafe, any parks or outdoor areas. I also wanted to go to the edo Tokyo museum to bring in some history but I know that it has closed. Is there anything similar we should check out?

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

I’m a bit surprised that so many itineraries posted on here still have these listed, so I’ll repeat what I’ve said in the past.

These places are exceedingly cruel and I would recommend thinking twice about whether you want to support a place like this with your money and patronage, especially with a 10 year old in tow. As you can imagine, keeping 20 nocturnal birds in a tiny room together all day, with their feet chained to a pole, for the amusement of tourists, is not the most humane way to spend your vacation. Even more so considering owls are not generally tolerant of human interaction in the first place.

  2. Hi!

Just a heads up, the last time I was in Japan (December 2022-January 2023) it was taking 2 days for TakQbin delivery. I might in your case depending on how much stuff you have, just bring something carry on sized to Disney and send anything larger to the airport.

I really liked the Disneyland Hotel. It’s an easy walk from Maihama.

If you can’t get into the Pokemon Cafe and really want to eat something Pokemon themed, you can go to Pokemon Sweets in Ikebukuro. It doesn’t take reservations. Be warned the food at the Pokemon Cafe is decidedly mediocre. I am so glad my tween no longer requires us to eat there. I’d also try to book for a non-week end/non-holiday day to up my chances of success, or if you can manage trying multiple times for ressies, try multiple times. It’s really hard to get in now!

  3. > Mt Takao

I recommend being flexible with the date on which you do this, as the views are much much better on a clear day (including the possibility of Fuji). I also recommend taking the chairlift – it only goes up halfway so there’s still a good hike, lets you skip the most boring part, and has excellent views on the way down. If departing from Shinjuku you can get a joint/discounted train+chairlift ticket from Keio.

  4. Nice itinerary but very very tight! Also, I hope you guys and your son are in good physical condition because it would require a lot (and I mean a lot) of walking.

Also, Hanayashiki is closed now and will reopen on July 20th apparently.

  5. i see you plan Hanayashiki for evening, but i think they usually close pretty early – like 6pm

i’d like to recommend the Japan Science Foundation Museum, it’s huge and has a ton of interactive exhibits. https://www.jsf.or.jp/en/

also Decks in Odaiba has several amusement areas like Joypolis, Legoland, retro shopping street, etc

  6. My 7 and 10 year old liked the games at Red Tokyo Tower. We were there a month ago.

  7. Poop (unko) museum, parasite museum?! Are things my kids are interested in haha. Odaiba (we are getting the waterbus from Asakusa there).

  8. Sunshine city has a pretty nice aquarium in the top floor and theres another dog cafe on the opposite side of the street of the shiba cafe near Senso Ji that has small non-shiba dogs that hung out with us and werent shy at all wich might be a good backup if shibas dissapoint 😀 (cant find the place on google but we were there 2 weeks ago)
