Renting in japan

I live in the company apartment , but I am now searching a apartment( house , mansion ) to rent to myself. Any tips in how to rent in Japan? Government has discounts for family? Any kind discounts? Good agencies?

  1. Figure out where you will be commuting to (for example your office). Pick a station or two in the that area. Make a note which lines stop there. Now start going backwards on those lines and checking housing available near each of the stop stations. places like suumo etc, but it might be cheaper to go to some local place instead.

  2. Government housing, though locations and age of the building vary.
I know from friends that it’s a good deal and maintenance is good, and you won’t have to deal with any of the “no Furriners” nonsense.

  3. As you’re looking for discounts, search for UR (Urban Renaissance) housing. UR apartments are partly subsidized by the government.

Best parts: no “key” money, no renewal fees, no agency / brokerage fee, and also no guarantor required.
