Where to go camping with lots of trees? Living near Yokohama

My family and I would like to go camping in October with friends but do not want to go to the type of campsite in Japan I’ve seen advertised before, which would be the big open grassy field style, where people tent close to each other and use communal sinks and whatnot. Being from Canada, I’m used to more private campgrounds that have lots of trees, and maybe even a river (or stream) going through them.

We live near Yokohama and have access to a car, and are willing to drive up to 3-4 hours away to camp for 2 nights. If anyone has any recommendations I would love to know!

Thank you

  1. You may also want to try asking in /r/Tokyo.

  2. Sounds like fun, “nap camp” is the best way to search I’ve found. Depending on budget you can rent out entire smaller campsite. You’ll probably have most luck with sites with less amenities. Izu has lots of little camp sites.

I Don’t think they have a filter for specifically just trees. But you’ll probably have a easier time if you try to book one in the mountains to have lots of trees. But as you know, a lot of the sites are cleared with defined slots for as many families or groups as possible. That way the campsite gets maximum dollar.

You probably would have an easier time with campsites that don’t have as many reviews and or are a bit rundown.

    Good luck!

  3. I can’t help much but how about Okutama? I saw camping grounds near the lake before.

  4. if you look in google maps and zoom in close enough they have several campsites on the map. lots around kanagawa just west of yokohama.
