I’m (38M) Australian possibly moving to Tokyo mid-year with wife (38F) and 2 kids (0M & 2F). Just budgeting out to find out if the move is financially viable. Will be on a salary of roughly $15M jpy. I am struggling to find info online regarding income tax payable. I’ve seen some sites that say a 20% withholding tax might be payable?
And then there is the resident tax. Is that not payable for a full 12 months from arriving? Or just the first year (arriving mid-year so only 6 months free).
Can anyone give me a breakdown of what tax i would be liable for in year 1 and 2?

First, r/JapanFinance is your best resource here.
Second, your resident tax is paid in arrears, meaning that since you didn’t work here in 2021, there’s nothing to bill, nothing to pay. The bill will arrive May-ish (depending on your municipality, I believe) in 2023 to pay for 2022.
A rough, good-enough estimator is [https://japantaxcalculator.com/](https://japantaxcalculator.com/)
But the aforementioned subreddit will be infinitely more valuable than here.
Google japan tax calculator there are a bunch of sites for this. 15M is not bad money at all
