Making papa tomos

I will finally take some parental leave to spend more time with my 6 months old and I’m hoping to be able to make a papa tomo or two who live near me here in Hyogo and also have 0歳児… but I’m sort of wondering where to start and what other dads’ success rates are on this, pre-kindergarten? Even the international groups I’ve been able to find seem exclusively geared towards moms. My city’s 子育て支援センター has a play area but I didn’t see anybody using it last time I was there in April.

Any advice is appreciated!

  1. Tokyo Mother’s Group on Facebook has ”Mother” in the title, but you would be more than welcome. There are also more specific groups for different wards in Tokyo that have less sexist names. There’s also a Roppongi playgroup. Are you based in Tokyo or further afield?

  2. Just my own experiences, but the most common conversations I have with kids my age at play places are brief apologies for border incursions.

And once I had a dad and his kid ask about a modified kite I was flying with my son.

That’s about it, good luck to you.

This sounds like the main place in your city? Try googling 子育てひろば or 子育てオープンスペース, there are a lot of smaller places available around town.

  4. For our center most of the kids come to play in the morning, usually between 10 and 12. Afternoons are quite dead.

  5. I visit the kuyakushos play space frequently with my baby. There’s dads there sometimes. I recommend you visit.
