I never received a fifth vaccine coupon. I had to manually request one for the fourth last fall, but had assumed that would put me in the automated system. What’s the deal?
Toddlers grow so fast… it’s already time again to buy a new pair of uwabaki to replace the hardly worn ones.
Didn’t expect to happen until iOS 17 was released, but you can now add ICOCA cards to Apple Pay!
Now I need to switch my commuter pass from Pitapa to ICOCA.
Recently started a new labor job and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations for a quick snack, ideally high in calories. Right now I just pack calorie mates just in case the job site is too far from a store.
Thanks
Nothing “official” on the news about it; but it kinda seems like the COVID numbers might be trickling-up … and secretly/incrementally, mitigations are going back-into place.
Two local convenience stores (a 7/11 and a FamilyMart, in Kanto) have re-installed the plastic barriers at the registers, and staff are masked-up again.
The local public piano, which had only recently re-opened, is now shut down again.
Could be all paranoid coincidence; but seems to me that there’s a quiet, behind-the-scenes drive, at the commercial level, to build up the “defenses” without worrying/panicking the public.
Have bunch of dollars from 10 years ago, thinking about exchanging it and buy house stuff
I’m thinking of buying an air purifier, my apartment gets really dusty and I’m just snotting everywhere all the time.
Anyone have any recommendations? Thinking of getting the Coway Mighty due to reviews, I don’t mind spending a bit (10-20kish)
I feel like I see more people in Tokyo with American style business wear (polo shirts, khakis, etc). Kansai seems to be more traditional+ occasionally cool biz
I’m kind of surprised how quickly Japanese got used to taking off masks. It’s only been a couple months-ish since masks became completely optional and I already see half or more of the people just going completely without. Guess the 和 will settle on non-mask wearing pretty soon
These days I feel pretty useless at work aside from my sparkly American accent. Trying to be helpful (English board, English school lunch menu, laminating stuff, applying for a school library grant, gunning for a higher position in JET) but I’m still scared/aware I have very few skills beyond sparkly American accent.
Well, I guess I am pretty good at pipettes but need to study harder for the N2 if I want a lab job.
Is there such a thing as June blues? I know a lot of people get depressed in the winter, but I feel like I feel down in the summer months.
There’s nothing majorly wrong with my life per se, but a lot of things that could be better, and I’m tired of always fighting what seems to be an uphill battle.
Anyone have ever worked at a ケバブ shop in Japan or are a ケバブ fan happen to know a recipe for their sauces. I’ve looked online but turns up German style doner kebabs and not the Japanese style.
If plastic bottles must be called “PET bottles”, why aren’t plastic strawberry boxes (made from PET) called “PET cases”?
I just found out I have an unpaid fire insurance for my last rented room, I checked the mailbox, and they sent me 請求書 as the insurance expired in April. Appearantly they have no idea I have no longer live there since March. What should I do? I am looking to submit PR application I hope this won’t affect anything.
Has anyone built or bought a ローコスト住宅? If so, is there anything you regret?
What was the story with the foreign guy carrying knives on the train? I’ve heard he was asleep and some guy saw some knives in his bag and hit the emergency button. I’ve also heard he was “brandishing” them as well as another story that there were no witnesses that he was doing so. Don’t know what to believe.
Changing the subject, on the news this morning, I saw some foreign guy was filmed sitting on a priority seat, and there was supposedly national outrage on social media, despite a) Japan, WTF and b) there was an empty seat beside him. Am I missing something?
If you want to make a Japanese person’s head explode, ask them why bank is 銀行 and not 金行.
Does anybody have one of those larger above ground pools that require a pump and chemicals? How much work is it? Do you regret going down that route? Last summer it was a real pita to fill/empty and clean the pool every day or two. It’s also a bit of an eyesore in the garden so if I could build an addition to our deck and hide it in that way it would be great.
Let it be known that the new Asahi white beer is pretty good! At least to my unrefined palate anyway.
Anyone know where to buy salt and vinegar chips locally? They have them on Amazon but the shipping cost is ridiculous. I’ve got a serious craving!
Now, I’m a grown adult, who’d never bully someone outside of a mutual joke.
I also have the fashion sense of “Well, it’s a solid navy suit, and I was feeling fresh, so I wore a slightly lighter shirt…with a bright blue tie! Yes! Watch out, I also have a bright ORANGE tie!
That said, since April of this year, every working day of my life, I see this “right-outta-school”-looking fresh hire loitering in the hallway on his phone a lot. I know he works there because I never see anyone outside of my immediate family and politicians doing greetings at the station as often (and he presented his ID card when I asked without resistance), Another part of the reason I see him is because he dresses in slacks/vest/suit checkboard patterns, part of my brain goes “That’s dazzle camouflage, fire torpedos there.”
I always want to ask him “Is The Riddler a good boss?” or “Now, I’ve heard The Joker pays 80% of your wages after Batman puts you in the hospital, is that true?” But I don’t say that, of course. That’d be mean.
Anyway, this one day, I realized :
I don’t have any stories about him, I just want other people to know he exists.
Because holy shit, I’d never dress like that, but good for him, having a look.
Going on anglophone Twitter nowadays is like staring a down the barrel of a gun that was created with the intention of killing all and any humanity left in everyone. It’s all just a meaningless mush. A true postmodern wasteland.
It’s tiring being young sometimes like- god, I want to live, I want to live so fucking bad, I want to make something out of this life, feed the curiosity inside me and know as much as I can about world issues while staying sane, but looking at the state of everything…. Why.
Why do job postings show a scale for 募集 but when you go to the interview they always shoot down your request and offer you the lowest possible amount? Does anyone else have this problem?
Like why do they even show the scale?
Had a boss tell me that my wife’s cooking must be good because I’m getting fat.
In his defense, she does send me to work with a really tasty bento every day, and it’s a hell of a lot better than his instant ramen, so I’ll still count it as my victory. But maybe I’ll ask for her to decrease the portion sizes, just a little.
I’m going trough a lot of sadness currently. I have always had a difficult relationship with my parents. Earlier this year my mother promised that she and my father would come to Japan (he has never been here and I was told that it was my choice to live here and I should come visit him). He did visit my sister who also emigrated to another country. The last time he has seen my child, his only grandchild was when my child was an 8 month old baby. He turned 4 a few days ago. We have no plans to visit my home country soon because it’s simply too challenging to fly over 15 hours for 1 parent (me) with a hyperactive toddler. Hence why my mother promised repeatedly that she and my father would come to Japan. They had sent my son a gift and when I opened the card it was co-signed by my father and it said ‘see you in X (our home country). His way of making it clear that he won’t visit as promised. I was really upset and sat quietly crying on my son’s birthday in the kitchen so he wouldn’t notice. I texted my parents saying thank you for the gift but I’m sad that you won’t come over as promised and I find it sad that this is the way this was communicated. No response. They completely ignored his birthday, not even a text message to say congratulations. This is ‘just’ 1 thing that happened, I have hugely lowered my expectations of them over the years and every time I set the bar lower, it seems they find a way to still disappoint. I would find it almost admirable if this didn’t feel so malicious. Why on earth would you use the birthday card of a 4 year old to communicate this knowing full well that it will spoil the happiness of that day and then PURPOSELY not send a message or call to say happy birthday to a 4 year old? Because that was it, they didn’t just forget. This is worse actually. Sorry for the rant.
go ahead, accuse me of humble brag, idc but i gotta share the fact that i got to pay it forward today.
backstory: a few months ago, i had dropped my IC card when getting off the train. didn’t notice until i got to the (unmanned) gate, so i had to go to the other side of the station to report it missing and get let out. i was already expecting a stupid amount of paperwork and probably days of waiting (and paying commute out of pocket) IF it got found at all. lucky me, someone had *just* turned it in! (couldn’t have been more than 15 mins)
today, same station same line, i saw a card in a case with a rubber spring strap on the platform as i stepped off the train. everyone was walking right by and an ojisan even stepped on it just before i got there. i took it straight to the same place i retrieved my card, so i hope i was quick enough to save someone else the trouble i imagined i’d have.
Okay I may be displaying extreme ignorance here but I’m curious
My boyfriend and I were discussing the new car he wants to buy. He’s on a waiting list because of the chip shortage(?) and he basically has to wait for the dealership to call him at some point at the end of this month.
He said, “it’s a lottery, so naturally the customers who spend the most at the dealer will be called first, the nice customers will be called next and if there are any spaces left, the most annoying customers will be called last”
I was like ??????? Omg? Is that what lottery means in this case? Hahaha. I thought it meant totally random. He said, “well, it’s a private business so actually they can do whatever they want. They’ll protect their own interests, right?”
Is this true?! Can private companies say it’s a lottery but actually just call whoever they want first? Or is this just his speculation?? Haha
Any recommendations for a letter of resignation? Or would a typical western letter suffice?
Has anyone ever wanted to pull off a full on perfectly executed round house kick to the face?
I mean one beautiful glorious full spin round house kick with 100% perfect form?
Like the kind when you land, and one knee and one hand lands perfectly on the ground in perfect sync as you slowly raise your head with fire in your eyes look up at your opponents and they know right away that you mean serous business and are nobody to be fucked with?
Anyway…
I lost my job at the Setagaya-ku library today.
Ski bought on Mercari received ! 150,000 is brand new price, bought for 45,000. The upper side is in a somehow bad shape, but surprisingly the inner side (idk english for this, the black part that touches the snow) and the metal edge seem like they have barely been used. I guess the previous owner just didn’t give a shit about the skis despite the price.
Still happy, I don’t really care about the shape of the upper side as long as it’s not broken.
Now waiting very impatiently for the winter to come. Also waiting for a keyboard that is supposed to arrive in fall.

Does anybody know why yokohama Minatomirai area sea color turned black? Last month it was natural blue color.
