  1. I need to apply for national health insurance at my city hall (leaving my current job). Is it difficult to apply for it? My Japanese is not that good, and I’m worried about doing this alone…

  2. If there is a daily question thread again tomorrow, can people complain about it not being the complaint thread?

  3. What is the equivalent of a Birth Certificate to use in official procedures in other countries? Would it be the 戸籍?
The 受理証明書 doesn’t seem quite the same as a birth certificate.

  4. When I buy beer with my ramen from a ticket machine, what do I do if I want another beer? Do I have to get up and buy another ticket?

  5. Are there clinics that are foreigner friendly for sleeping pills? Could be mental clinic or sleep clinic. Not going for therapy, counseling, or full blown sleep studies, just regular consultation for getting the pills.

Location is in eastern or central Tokyo. Either Japanese or English is fine, as long as it’s foreigner friendly.

  6. My apartment rental agency is charging me tax on my rent ($30-40 on top of the rent). Is that normal now? I don’t see anything on the lease about it.

  7. How does one dispose of garbage roadside in the local tradition?
I have a couple of broken cinder blocks that I can’t get rid of and I’m wondering if need to buy a stamp or a sticker somewhere?
Or can I just put them in a couple of 7 Eleven bags with an obento box, some pet bottles and a pack of cigarettes and throw them in the brush by the underpass?

  8. Has anyone stayed at Bleston Court for a vacation before? How far in advance did you need to book it?

I’m fairly flexible with looking for somewhere to stay, but this places caught my attention as it seemed to be fully booked til Kingdom come.

  9. is it possible to get a drivers license from zero in a month, more specifically 4-weeks?

I am free most days and I need/want to get it before going home.

Would also be great if you could recommend a school that’ll allow me to do that. Thanks

  10. I’ve received my first health insurance slips for payment and they’re about 1800 yen per month. Is this right? It’s a lot less than I had anticipated.

  11. Anyone ever use ToySub or other toys subscription? Do you think it’s worth the monthly price? Would love to hear user opinion rather than just looking at influencers or blogger review.

  12. Super Premium Boss Deluxe Stupid Question

How can I get/make/save up to ¥10,000,000 in five years?

  13. Why do fights break out at matsuris? Specifically, around the mikoshi where it’s super crowded. I notice the happi-wearing mikoshi men break out in a fist fight once the mikoshi is lifted up. Are they fighting over a spot on the mikoshi? Is this just a mosh pit for the kami sama? Or is it a regional thing (the instances I noticed were in Taito-ku, Tokyo at the Torigoe matsuri and the other one in Kappabashi)?

  14. A pigeon has taken a liking to the space between the ceiling and the aircon box on my balcony and it’s getting annoying. It’s right next to my bed so I keep waking up at like 5 am to it cooing. Any cheap ideas to get this pigeon to stop coming?

  15. Towards the end of last week I was getting very brief calls from a private number. They’d let it ring maybe once and then hang up. And since it’s a private number I can’t call back. One time I happened to be holding the phone when the call came in, so I answered it, but whoever was on the other end hung up quickly. And these calls haven’t been coming since.

Has anyone ever had anything like this happen to them?

  16. What happens to an adopted child in terms of koseki? Can they be on the adopted family’s koseki?

  17. looking for a park in tokyo where we can use the grills and have some drinks. any reccs?

  18. What happens if a person naturalizes and then decides sometime down the road that they don’t want to be a Japanese citizen anymore?

A friend asked me, and I was at a total loss for how to answer. Tried looking online but couldn’t find any examples, but I’m also not very smart, so.

  19. What are the pro of PR instead of 5 years spouse Visa? I learned you need to renew the PR every 7 years anyway so I’m wondering if I should go through all the tax certificates collecting pain…

  20. I’d like to do forex trading with JPY as a side hustle, what are the implications in regards to taxes and visa restrictions if I use a Japanese bank account?

  21. How many days in a row have you taken sick days? Simply just wondering. I notice a lot of people just take one day and go back in the next at my work (a school). But I cannot recover so fast. I feel so guilty to take 2-3 days off even when I am feeling awful with fever. :'(

  22. In America, I used things called Field Notes (notebooks/pads) because they were small, had good paper, and looked cool. I ran out of the ones I use over here.

What are some good brands out here in Japan that I should look into, with similar feel to the Field Notes (Slightly thin, good construction, good paper, lined pages instead of dot/grid)?

  23. Family a few houses down has a proper driveway which they park their normal car into. A few months ago, a kei car, the type commonly seen doing deliveries, appears parked in front of their driveway regularly.

This is on a public road in a cul-de-sac. It is making manoeuvring past and getting a good angle for parking difficult for 4-5 other houses in the neighbourhood.

It’s regularly left parked outside in the road over night, and the width of the road is not big enough to make it legal to temporarily park there either. There are multiple laws being violated by them being there, most significantly the 自動車の保管場所の確保which states one cannot use public roads as a regular place to park (第十一条), which is actually criminal and if charged will get you a criminal record.

Nobody else in the entire neighbourhood does this, except for brief visits from friends and family which seems completely acceptable.

Anybody experienced something similar? What did you do?
