Is this curtsy traditional in Japan?

In this nice little short a group called Atarashii Gakko are posing for photos with Akiko Wada and one of them, Mizyu, gives her a little gift of socks. Mizyu bows and then lowers herself a little more with a curtsy. Is this a relatively new thing and is it, like in the West, just done by women? I’ve seen foreign princesses and politicians curtsying to the Japanese Emperor on official visits so has Japanese culture picked up on that and incorporated it? How does the curtsy fit into Japanese etiquette?
