Which visa for research students?

Hi everyone, I‘m trying to self-organize a research stay as part of my master studies in Japan for next year. I’m based in Germany btw.
Through my professor I was able to directly contact a professor at Osaka University and he agreed with hosting my stay. I would have the official status “special research student“ at the university and I‘m trying to find out if I can apply for the usual student visa with this, as I won’t be a part of any programs and not a regular student (e.g. not allowed to visit classes). Or am I eligible for a different visa?

Also, does any of you have any experience in self-organizing a stay outside any programs? What documents do I have to request from my Japanese professor and Osaka University for my visa? I‘m really happy about any help!

Probably, but the people to ask about this are the staff at OsakaU. I can *guarantee* that you’re not the first research student they’ve hosted and that they’ll know exactly what you should do.

  3. You don’t have to apply for the visa, Osaka University (the department your professor is under) will apply for the CoE for you. You just take the CoE and exchange it for a visa. Your professor’s secretary will ask you for documents.

If you are a research student, it will be a student visa. If you are a paid researcher, you will be a “professor” working visa.
