Bicycle registration in Tokyo

I bought a bike second hand but I’m an idiot and forgot to register the bike immediately after I got it. The issue is, I no longer have the details and no way to get back in touch with the person I bought it from (it was an old store that closed down) about a year ago.

Do I have any options to register the bike under my own name or am I just stuck now with it being unregistered/registered to its previous owner?

  1. If it is registered to the previous owner (check for the sticker on the bycicle), you are out of luck. If it is unregistered you may find some shop willing to register it.

  2. You’d need to supply proof of the purchase. If it was indeed a store then hopefully you kept a receipt or invoice or something.

Most bike shops will register the bike on your behalf – provided you have proof of purchase/ownership. Even my fancy-pants Blue Lug store was happy to register my bike, which I didn’t purchase from them.
