hi there, I would be heading to oita for a 5months exchange soon in September and I’m working on getting a sim card.
I see sakura mobile being recommended and it looks fairly attractive with its 25gb plan because I’m a really heavy user.
I am however worried about a Japanese sim card triggering the default camera shutter sound permanently on my phone. I previously did some research and had some mixed responses, some said it’ll turn on the shutter sound permanently, and some said it’ll not turn the shutter sound.
my questions are:
1. would you guys recommend any other companies for a phone & sim plan? (best coverage for kyushu?)
2. would a Japanese sim card turn the shutter sound on my phone on? if yes is it permanent? particularly sakura mobile if anyone has any experience with it.

**recommended SIM card for exchange student and camera sound**

It’s going to depend on your phone but it should not trigger the camera sound temporarily or permanently. I have a US purchased iphone and there is no camera sound when using it with my Japanese sim card.
Japanese SIM cards can turn on the shutter sound in my experience, but it turns off once they’re removed. That being said, it’s normal and expected for phones to make the sound in Japan, so you shouldn’t be worried about it. At least as long as you’re not doing anything bad.
My current phone is a JDM phone (a Sony) FWIW, I can’t remember if it happened with my US phone too or not, but I believe it did.
I can relay my experience.
Current phone is a US Pixel 6. When I put in a Japanese SIM (voice, Softbank), I get the sound. Once I switch back to my US SIM (T-Mobile), no sound. Also, no sound when using a data only eSIM (Ubigi).
Previous phone (Pixel 3a) with a data only SIM did not make a sound.
