Sectioning off parts of the house using things like PVC strip curtains etc to keep aircon or heat inside certain zones

Has anyone done this before? I have 3 bedrooms upstairs which are very close to each other and all have their own aircons.

My goal is to just section off the part of the house where these thee rooms are so that if one aircon is used with the door open, it then lets the cold air travel out between the rooms but goes no further (ie down the stairs, into the kitchen, bathroom etc). The PVC curtain would be used to block the aircon air from going any further, keeping everyone in the 3 rooms cool without needing to switch on all the aircon units.

I hope this makes sense! My wife understandably doesn’t want a PVC curtain in the house cause it will make our place look like the cold department of a supermarket lol. If there’s anything people can recommend for the concept I’m thinking of, I’d be really grateful!

  1. We’ve done it. A PVC curtain is probably not absolutely necessary. Close-woven cloth should suffice. When I was doing remote work, we put a cloth curtain across the home office room just behind my desk and heated only that area. The area on the other side of the curtain was appreciably colder, though not so cold as outdoors.

  2. I do this between floors to stop the good air traveling where it’s not wanted, winter or summer. Works fine. I got some heavy curtains and I’m glad I did as sometimes there is a through breeze and the curtains can move quite a bit.

  3. I use a tension rod and some curtains. Both sheer and more thicker depending on what I want. Sheer when I want light to pass through but still keep the barrier (you can still tell the temp difference between my non climate control room vs rest of the house) and obvs the thicker curtain you can deff tell.

    The curtain is very effective

  4. We do it with tension bars and regular cloth curtains in my house. Works decently.

  5. as everyone says, curtains work! I used a big curtain stand (vertical tension rods & curtain pole) to block off my room + part of dining room from the kitchen 🙂 遮熱 type curtain seemed to work better but might be a placebo heh

  6. Why ? It’s unlikely you would achieve any savings; and it would require the door open. Let everyone close their doors, set the temperature they like, and turn it off whenever they are not in the room
