  1. i’ve always had jobs that either automatically gave scheduled raises or not at all ever. i was told i’d get one after a year, but nothing has changed, so i’m thinking of asking but where do i start? is this something i take up with my bucho, or should i go straight to HR?

update: i’ve been ratted out! i had started asking coworkers questions about salaries and raises, and somebody squealed to bucho, so now he knows. he called and asked why i’m “complaining” (oh boy) so i tried to smooth it over by saying i’m merely curious about opportunities to move up and am willing to do special training or consider other openings in the company if that’s an option. fingers crossed i don’t have a target on my back now…

  2. If I buy a used car from a private seller with 1.5 years of shaken left, does that include the mandatory liability insurance? My research says it’s included in the shaken payment but do i need to purchase my own when I buy the car? I known i have to get my own voluntary insurance but none of the insurance sites mention the mandatory insurance.

  3. Any women in their 30’s have any advice on trying to find a decently paying full time job after having a child? I’ve been working from home just doing some freelance work online but I’d really like to get a more stable salary. I have quite a lot of experience, university degree (although that’s probably meaningless now) and I speak Japanese but I just can’t get an interview. Am I just getting too old? Would it be worth getting another qualification or studying something to get my foot in the door somewhere?
I’m feeling a bit defeated so it would be great to hear from anyone will similar experience.

  4. How do I fully integrate a buffalo router on leopalace internet?

I’ve plugged it in and I have limited internet access. It keeps asking me to sign-in or authorize for access. Can’t get it to work at all on my Xbox neither : /

  5. Can you use a non-Japanese phone number with Mercari Japan?

I’ve registered with a Japanese number and even gotten verified but will soon be returning overseas permanently.

Can only Japanese numbers be used or can you change to one from another country?

  6. Epos card isn’t taking my money from Japan Post Bank. It’s supposed to come out on the 27th. I filled out the form for automatic withdrawals and got the confirmation that they processed it over a month ago. Any insights?

  7. So that post of a fiancé that was caught cheating is really blowing up.

It seems that anyone living here long enough eventually comes to the “agreement” that Japan has a notorious cheating problem. There’s no shortage of Japanese people being interviewed about the topic, and even in that context knowing that they are supposedly fully aware that they’re being interviewed and that their responses will be posted online, they still seem to be pretty nonchalant about both cheating or being cheated on. Yes, cheating is a thing just about anywhere in the world, but the attitude towards it here is undeniably… unique? As foreigners living here, why do some of you think that’s the case?

  8. Hellowork questions. Getting it again.

In May my contract with my previous job ended and I got on hellowork. After a month I got a 3 month contract job at a job a friend worked at to which will end on July 31st.
Am I able to get back on hellowork?
I’m also thinking of changing living locations, am I able to get hellowork when I’m staying at a friends place or do I need my own apartment?

  9. The black company where I work is slowly automating most of my tasks. I am seishain (been one for over 6 years) Can he fire me due to redundancy?

The owner hates me, that is a fact. He has demoted me in the past and I have been doing admin job since and 2 FT + 3 PT employees took over my original job (but of course when I asked for help, it was denied).
Then, the main FT got demoted (it seems my job was not that easy ne) and now he is currently being bullied (this is pretty much his MO) and given impossible tasks for his skills. Th 3 PT were let go, and one new person was hired now.

My question is about myself: can I be fired if all my tasks eventually get automated? The Japanese bullying of not giving me anything to do to turn me to quit did not work with me as I do lots of side gigs so I keep myself busy (they did that for 6 months or so).

  10. Really more of trying to get a few perspectives if what I’m trying to do is stupid. Tldr at bottom.

I’m an eikaiwa teacher living in Fukui and have been job hunting for close to a year. I got to the final interview stage with a certain company and I think I am close to getting an offer (am told they just need to check with HR regarding my starting date).

Without revealing too much, if I do get that offer, I will be working in Aomori. It’s far, but I am willing to move. It’s a translator position at a small manufacturing company which I’m told I will be the only foreigner working there. It will be for a seishain position and I will be paid 220k a month which is slightly better than my current pay (180k). In addition, I will get a bi-annual bonus so in total my salary may or may not be around 3mil/year. And my salary will increase if I pass the yearly performance evaluation and sorts.

But they would not cover moving expenses. Oh and there won’t be any housing subsidy. I’m able to survive now with my current salary because I’m basically living for free. So I will have to pay a huge chunk to move there (I have a few savings). Housing will also be a new expense. My commute will only be covered if I take public transportation such as a bus or train. I’ve looked up the area and it looks like there are a few buses running but I’m not sure yet how often it is.

I’m used to working and living in the inaka so as long as there are buses I think I might be able to survive without a car. If not, I’d have to buy one but my concern is still the living expenses. I know this isn’t Tokyo so I’m thinking living costs won’t be too expensive for a single person. Maybe rent will only be as high as 50k.

Tldr would 220kyen per month be enough to live in Aomori (I won’t be working in Aomori city if it matters)?

  11. Share house questions.

My cousin is coming to live in Japan as a student. I’ve never lived in a share house and currently looking over options in the internet.

I was on a dorm during my student era and his uni’s dorm currently has no openings.

Are there any recommendations that are student friendly?
    Location: Tokyo/Saitama

  12. Where is a good place to sell tires? I live in the countryside, so not many options. They are selling for just under 9man used online, and I will go as low as 4man. I am hoping for the least amount of hassle.

  13. Is there an official source that lists the minimum income requirement for applying PR? I recall on this subreddit that it’s gotta be 3 million yen or more. But a friend who is applying for PR states that there’s nothing about it written on the official PR application website, only that the applicant will have to show proof that they can survive financially on their own and no designation of any income level. Are we looking at the wrong source? [This is what we’re looking](https://www.moj.go.jp/isa/publications/materials/nyukan_nyukan50.html)

Or is it one of those unwritten rules?

  14. Does anyone know of a website for finding medical institutions? I SWEAR I used a website where you could search by type and it had an “English speaking staff” filter. Pretty sure the website was in English or a mix of English and Japanese. Possibly connected to the “multilingual medical questionnaire” website. Google isn’t helping me and haven’t found it digging through my onboarding documents from moving to Japan, which I’m fairly certain I got it from. It’s not a Tokyo specific thing as I’m not in Tokyo. Does anyone have any ideas of what the website is?

**EDIT** I found it! It’s the Japan Tourism Agency medical help website [the “search medical institutions” button is what I’m talking about](https://www.jnto.go.jp/emergency/eng/mi_guide.html)

  15. What’s the difference now between asking here and asking in a separate post/thread?

All my questions, I think, are all stupid so recently I just ask through here.
But I think one possible pro of posting it separately is visibility, so sometimes I consider doing that.

  16. What happens if I don’t pay my last utility bill? I’m a foreigner living abroad and moving back to my home country soon. I am canceling my utilities. I keep trying to tell Tepco I do not have a forwarding address in Japan and no one to pay my last bill and they keep insisting I need one. The housing company I am using says they will just deliver the last bill to my current Japanese address after I leave (which I obviously won’t be able to pay) but it’s fine to just not pay it. Is this true? If I want to come back to Japan in the future, can this unpaid electricity bill affect me later?

  17. I got divorced about 5 years ago, I went to get a proof of divorce (離婚受理証明書) this week and the ward office said they only have a record of my marriage.

It’s definitely the right ward office, I went there together with my ex wife and got a certificate at the time, and a couple of friends remember me showing them the certificate (I since lost it along with some other documents)

Other than contact ex wife (I don’t have her details or those of anyone who knows her so not sure how I do that either) anything I can do?

Also how could this situation come to be? Multiple people have seen the certificate I had before so I know I’m not going crazy.

  18. Where can I find the official worldcup highlights for the nadeshiko team?

During the mens’ I’d find them on youtube but I can’t find them for the womens tournament.

  19. A friend of mine recommended the Donald Keene book 「日本人の美意識」, is there an English version? Or does he discuss the topic in any of his other works?

  20. Another car question to go with my earlier one. I have a used car lined up to buy from a private seller. According to him, if I’ve bought insurance then I can take the car from him and do the registration transfer afterwards. Is this correct. Can I really just take the car off his hands like that? It’s a kei car if that helps and my area does not require a proof of parking certificate.

  21. Are there a lot less mosquitoes this year or is it me? I have a sort of allergy for the bites of mosquitoes here to the point where bites swell up to the extreme. So far I have only had one bite this summer while usually they love to attack me constantly. Last night I took a walk by the river near my house, zero bites and I didn’t use any mosquitoe spray. I was thinking if I eat differently this year, but my diet hasn’t changed, I have only started taking vitamin C supplements lately and I am wondering now if this makes me smell and taste less appealing to them.

  22. Is it OK to just order a drink at an Izakaya? Or do you also have to order food?
Often I just want to check out the atmosphere of a place or 3 and I’m not hungry.
Every time I’ve gone with my wife she insists on both of us ordering for full food and drinks, and even then she feels uncomfortable because she can’t drink alcohol.

  23. How do you say “can I work in with you?”, as in trying to share equipment at the gym?
