Itinerary Check: Tokyo > Kamikochi > Takayama > Gero > Nagoya > Ishigaki > Tokyo

I’ll solo travel to Japan for the second time on september. This is my itinary and will welcome any advice to change it around. I’ll be looking for nature and true experience, ideally away from most tourists (I know, that’s just a dream):

09th: landing in Tokyo late. I’ll stay at Hotel Tavinos Asakusa. My main purposes this time is to check on Akihabara, find a good ramen (Rokurinsha), may be a homemade curry by some grand’ma in some little shop and enjoy the mood of the city, may be connecting with some people from here ;

12th: Moving to Kamikochi and staying at Okuhida Hot Spring Hirayukan for 2 days. Onsens + Shin-Hotaka Ropeway are the plan. Not sure if there’s a good hike through the forest to a temple there ;

14th: Takayama. Staying at Wat Hotel. Hoba Miso and Hida Beef Burger are expected. Two days for the markets, Showa-Kan retro Museum, Shrine and Hida Furukawa ;

16th: Gero. Staying at Toraya inn. Unfortunately, it’s going to be a saturday, meaning the hi quality other places are already reserved or expensive. I’ve been hesitating with going to Gero, but I guess I’ll have quality time there. Not sure where to eat yet ;

17th: Moving to Nagoya and stopping at Shirakawa-go. I’ve been hesitating with staying for the night there, but I guess this small town is just too quiet on night and the scenary in september isn’t great enough already. So I’ll be going to Nagoya directly at the end of the day. Looking for a Nagoya restaurant for the dinner ;

18th: Enjoying Nagoya in the morning, then flight to Ishigaki ! 3 nights there to enjoy the island (scooter), Taketomi, Iriomote, and some scuba diving. I loved my few days around Okinaa before ;

21th: Back to Tokyo before a flight back to Paris on the 23th. I hope I won’t regret not staying for 5 days instead of 3 in Ishigaki !

Be welcome to share your feelings and ideas. I still can adapt some steps too.

  1. I suspect you have some geography confused – the Shirakawa that’s between Gero and Nagoya is not the famous tourist village Shirakawago – that’s between Takayama and Kanazawa. I don’t think there’s much at that Shirakawa

    Gero is nice enough but I wouldn’t personally stay there overnight unless you’re really into onsens or really going for a very slow-travel relaxing trip. Worth getting off the train for on the way through though.
