Does anyone have an idea of how difficult it is for US foreigners to get into English taught masters programs at Kyoto University or University of Tokyo?
I relatively recently graduated from the University of Notre Dame in computer science with 3.5-3.6 gpa. I did not do any published research during undergrad. Now I work as a full stack dev in fin-tech for a fortune 100 company (although I would not consider it particularly prestigious).
I’m looking to transition to working for a non-profit or some kind of tech company focused on social/environmental good. There is a masters program at Kyoto University that stands out to me for my interests and I would like to do it sometime in the next few years. By the time I would be applying to this masters program I would be a few years out of undergrad and would be roughly n3/n2 in Japanese.

Do I have a chance of getting in? Is there anything I could do in the next 1-2 years to improve my chances?

Apply to at least 20 programs.
You have a better chance of getting into Kyodai than Todai, but my understanding is that for graduate school the average acceptance GPA is around 3.8-3.9. It’s not any sort of absolute requirements – they accept people with 3.5 and decline people with 4.0s, but just understand from a baseline. Imagine if you were applying to Harvard/MIT/Oxford/Stanford – imagine it because it’s the same.
Tohoku also has like 10+ International Graduate programs.
