I’m Biking Across Japan (Part 9): The Detroit of Japan

Hey guys!

Forgive me for the late response, I ran into a few hiccups. I continued my ride through Japan, leaving Kyoto. I was surprised by the intense heat and humidity in the countryside. The humidity was so bad I wasn’t able to sweat off the heat. I bought cold water and kept pouring it on myself as I biked to keep cool as I rode. As I biked I met a few locals who cheered me on!

I reached Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest lake. I found an isolated part of the coast and went for a swim. It was a great way to cool off. I found a local coffee shop to grab some breakfast, It was another restaurant/home with home-cooked food!

I made it to Nagoya, also known as the Detroit of Japan. This is Japan’s 4th biggest city and I was impressed by how many factories there were. Planes, trains, cars, and many other things are built here. People told me that there wasn’t too much to do in Nagoya but I still wanted to spend some time exploring this industrial town. I went to the train museum where I was some of Japan’s first trains, a miniature city with mini trains and a simulation be a conductor. I also explored Toyota’s museum. Toyota started off as a fabric company, it was interesting to see its progression. It was a bit weird to see my first car (Toyota Corolla) behind glass.

On a sadder note, as I hiked up a shire I tripped, fell, and reinjured my leg. It wasn’t too bad, but I hurt injured ligaments earlier on in the series. I decided to take some time off and allow my leg to heal properly so I booked a flight back to the US. One of my friends had a cousin in Yokohama that offered to host the bike so I shipped it there for 16,000 Yen (\~$110). I took the bullet train there and helped store it. I was really grateful for her help. I then caught a flight back to the US.

This will not be the end! I’m hoping to come back and use the same bike to finish the journey soon. I hope I can come back in 7 months.

Thank you guys for all of the support! I promise to make these write-ups when I continue the journey 🙂

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your leg! Hopefully you’ll get to finish your trip soon! You did the right thing, taking time to heal is the wise move.

  2. Thanks for sharing. I’ll be riding around Biwa in around 10 weeks, can’t wait!
