Drivers license after expiring?

Hey all, my drivers license expired more than 6 months ago. I’d like to get a new one but does anyone know what the process looks like if you’ve already had a Japanese license?

Unfortunately it seems I can’t just walk in and renew.

  1. Do you have a reason (sick, was abroad for a while)? If so, go to the drivers center ASAP (like, tomorrow) and get the process starting to renew.

If you don’t… I guess you can try re-converting? But you might have a problem with the residency requirements on your foreign license.

In the worst case you will have to get your drivers license from scratch. Like take the paper test and the practical test. They really really don’t like expired licenses.

  2. I was 6 months late earlier this year with no excuse. Went in and walked out same day with my new licence. Albeit not the gold license I would have gotten. Had to do a lot of paper work, sitting around, and watch the hour long don’t-mow-people-down video but it was mostly no different than the first time I did it, sans test.

  3. you should try asap .. maybe use the corona excuse… you’d been sick for a while …. Blah blah .. better than starting from scratch

  4. And why can you not walk in to the renewal centre and take some initiative? The longer you wait the more likely it is you’ll have to start from scratch. Either way, good luck.
