Finding Hibiki in Japan

Hi all, I’m trying to find a bottle of Hibiki whisky, aged if possible as I am meeting my girlfriends parents for the first time in Obon. I’m based in west Tokyo but can travel if needed! Thanks!

  1. Liquor Mountain in Ginza is a whisky specialist, they will likely have what you want

  2. Go to your local booze store… If they even have anything, it’ll be Hibiki 12. Hibiki 21 is over 7man a bottle these days, and unless you’re filthy rich, you ain’t buying a Hibiki 30+

  3. Unless her mother is a whiskey drinker, it’s probably not a good idea for a present.

  4. I buy whisky to sell online at auction, have a few Hibikis at the moment, happy to sell at cost. DM if interested

  5. 1. Forget about age statement Hibiki other than buying online for silly prices and hoping it’s real

    2. You might be able to get a NAS (No Age Statement) Hibiki in a liquor store.

    3. There’s not really a specific liquor store we can recommend as each one generally only gets a couple of NAS bottles and they sell out quickly, so even if they had them yesterday, probably not today.

    4. Best option, is to search around where you are in Google maps for “liquor store near me” and then go to each (or call) and see if they have.

    5. Or order online for a quite inflated price with associated risk.

However, I’d question whether you need a Hibiki.

If your parents in law are Japanese giving them a Japanese whisky isn’t very special (Japanese generally undervalue their own whisky) and you may also end up looking like a fool for buying something overpricednif they’re aware of the current situation.

If they’re actually Whisky drinkers, getting them a nice Scotch (or Bourbon if you’re American) probably makes more sense. If they’re not whisky drinkers, then good wine is better.

For a good Scotch, without knowing their tastes, I’d recommend an Arran or perhaps the Glenmorangie 14 Quinta Ruban, if they like peaty then you can never go wrong with an Ardbeg Uigeadail or Lagavulin 16. Any good liquor store would have all/most of these and none of them should be over 10k

  6. I’ve seen various Hibiki varieties in department store basements. Try Isetan or head to Ginza Six.

  7. The Hakushu distillery is a couple of hours away by train/bus. They have a very well stocked gift shop. Might be a nice weekend with the GF.

  8. what about nihonshuu japanese sake. Normal japanese alcohol enjoyer loves sake, unless her dad is a whiskey only man. Japanese sake is also usual gifts at any formal yet friendly occasion.

Cheap hibiki is available on amazon btw
