  1. Are there any decent jobs right now? Almost got suckered into Nova cuz I wanted to be back in Japan so badly. It seems like a cesspool if you only have your BA. ALT work seems like the way to go but there’s a lot of competition, it takes a lot time to get in, they pay about the same, etc. Normally, I’d just go on a travel visa but that’s no longer an option. Anybody have any opinions on this? Thanks fellow gaijin!

  2. My school is acting really weird during these Covid times.

We haven’t had doors since… well forever.
I asked 2 months ago (when Covid cases were low) if we could put them back because it’s really disruptive with kids running out of the classroom and when doing listening hearing screaming kids from the room next door and so on.
    Was told no.
    Okay all fine and dandy.

Yet during the summer classes we have now, we crammed 16 students into a classroom made for 8-10 kids.

Fine if they didn’t want to put up the doors but then cramming a bunch of kids into one room just makes no sense using their own argument.

I know it’s all about the money but the hypocrisy just gets to me.

  3. First time I ever wore old spice to an elementary school. One of the naughty boys pretends to smell my armpit wanting to do the old “Kuuusaiiii!!” schtick. Instead he pauses, gives it another whiff and goes “Mecha iii niyoi” and the proceeds to call his friends over. At which point I had to get out of dodge as fast as possible to escape a horde of 10 years from wanting to smell my pits.

  4. Are there any good ALT companies in the north? I want my free time back. I’ve been teaching eikaiwa for the last 4 years. I’ve gotten my CELTA and, unless there’s another good cert for teaching children and/or beginners, I’m pretty happy with where my professional growth is at. I’d rather have more time to myself than some arbitrary amount of “elitism” over ALTs. The classic Eikaiwa late Friday hours followed by early Saturday hours are slowly killing me.

  5. I’m listening to another teacher (one room over). I don’t know why beginning teachers sound like they’re angry whenever they talk. Must be really nerve-racking for students.
