In mid-December, we are spending 3 or 4 days in Kyoto before heading to Tokyo and we would like to stop by somewhere along the way to experience snow. I have personally been to Gifu, Takayama last year around the same period – with day trips to Shinhotaka Ropeway, Shirakawago and Hida Folk Village which I really enjoyed. Now I am looking for alternative places. At the moment I’m looking at 3 days at said area before heading to Tokyo.
I am traveling with a group of 7 adults and a 12 yo. Going a snowy place is one of the agenda but I am having trouble deciding where to go.
Sports activity is not for us, short hikes are fine but nothing too difficult. Going onto a ropeway to a mountain top is a nice bonus! (similar to Shinhotaka Ropeway). And quite importantly it must be accessible by public transport because we are not driving.
Most information I find online leans towards Nagano. Since we are not doing any sports activity I am wondering if there are other suitable places.
1. Nagano
* Perhaps with day trips to Hakuba, and/or visiting snow monkey.
* Snowshoeing Togakushi-Jinja
* Nozawaonsen seems like an interesting place too!
We are also probably getting a JR pass too, but undecided at the moment.
Please recommend any places that could work for us, thanks in advance!

Unless you plan on skiing, you shouldn’t go to Hakuba.
