I’m currently on a HSFP visa (i) and I’m thinking what would be more beneficial, if moving to the type (ii) or to PR and I have one question:
As far as I can see the HSFP (ii) doesn’t expire. Does that mean that, in a similar way to PR, I could potentially leave the country with a re-entry permit for several years (4-5 years, renewing the re-entry permit once) without losing my visa status?
Also does that mean I would be able to request the nenkin lump sum when leaving? Or is this possible only if giving back your visa status?
Thanks!

HSP (ii) is tied to your employers, meaning if you change jobs or quit, you’d need to reapply (and re-assess your points) for it.
It also gives the benefits of HSP (I).
However, PR is just different. Once you get it, it never expires nor needs to be renewed. However PR doesn’t give the benefits of HSP.
HSP(ii) doesn’t expire. But it requires you to be employed by the employer sponsoring it.
Unlike HSP(i) where you get 3 months to sort a new visa, with HSP(ii) you get 6 months
Edit: the benefit of HSP(ii) over PR is that you get to utilize the HSP benefits (such as support a parent’s visa) and you would never become liable for exit tax as it’s a table 1 visa, and you can still remain a “limited tax payer” should you have been in Japan for less than 10 years meaning you can still get overseas gifts and overseas inheritance tax free until you become an “unlimited tax payer” (spend >10 years in Japan)
The moment you get PR, which is a table 2 visa you become an “unlimited tax payer” and then after 5 years on a table 2 visa you become liable for exit tax, should you have >¥100 million in unrealized exit’taxable assets
