Opening Bank Accounts

Why are banks here always so stingy when trying to open an account. When I first got here, I got an account with J-Post. It was easy for my work. Now I’ve been here for 8 months and I have a valid visa to open an account. But they always fight tooth and nail to not let me get one

  1. What do you mean by “fight tooth and nail” in this case? I’ve never had an issue opening an account, and many/most banks are happy to do it even online or via post.

Generally banks are happy to open an account as long as it is at a branch close to where you live. They tend to be resistant to opening accounts at locations that don’t seem to have any relation to you as historically that was something fraudsters did.

That said, as consumer accounts ~~are~~ tend to be money losers, it would not be surprising if some banks attempted to dissuade people some of the time.

  2. Because they have to comply with government regulations while simultaneously dealing with foreigners who are trying to circumvent government regulations.

  3. I just used the account opening app to open my SMBC account and got my debit card by post. I didn’t go to the branch and speak any Japanese. But the app itself is in Japanese (iirc).

  4. Are a US citizen by chance? Stupid over-reaching US government has FACTA regulations that banks have to deal with for ‘Muricans. It necessitates extra administrative work for the bank that simply adds time & hassle. Other than that, as long as you are a resident, there shouldn’t be any issues.

  5. SMBC Prestia is the best bank. Full English support, online application, credit card, online banking… and if you have a residence card that has at least 3 months on it, they will give you an account.

So refreshing to see a bank in Japan where opening an account does not involve physical forms, going to a bank in-person or even reading a single like of Japanese text.

  6. Yeah, that’s because the US requirements on reporting bank account info and total savings over $10K are a royal PIA for banks. Many local credit unions will deny Americans outright.

  7. I strongly suspect OP is leaving something out of the equation, because there is zero chance banks are ‘fighting tooth and nail’ to prevent him/her from opening a bank account.
