Bag with air tag got stolen and cuz the location it shows isn’t super precise cops won’t do anything

because it’s hot in the noon I like to do Uber eats at night, and I’ve been doing this for a while. But today I went to a restaurant at around 12:30 am to pick up the food, and the bag I left outside got stolen within minutes. Its a common practice to leave the outside as its bulky af. So after that I stop a patrol car and explain how my bag got stolen 5 minutes ago, which has my mibunsyo, cc, driving license and all. Then I remembered that my wallet thats inside the bag got air tag in it. So after going to the location with cops there were lots of people and no sign of my bag which is green and should stand out. Cops said something along the line of, there are lots of people so we cant go doubting them (I do agree with them) all so just file a complaint, pause all your cards, and reissue your license and residence card. so I filed a report and am planning on going to the immigration and license center today. Just wanted to share my experience and remind you to not completely place your trust on airtag because mine is 1 minutes away from a koban and they cant do anything.

EDIT: I found it guys. Thanks for pointing out the find my iphone feature. I borrowed my brother’s phone and it turned out to be in the same place it was stolen from yesterday, but on a different floor. I woke up at 9 and first thing I did was check the location of my airtag and it hadn’t moved but somewhere in the afternoon, they returned it to the location it was stolen from and hid it under the stairs. and ofc all the money was gone but I am glad I got my wallet. My theory is that they saw me and the cops wandering around the place my bag was last night and thought of returning it when its safe. I’ll never let my guard down.

  1. Honestly if it hasn’t moved chances are they dumped your wallet when they found it. If you go back when there aren’t a lot of people and give it a search you might find it and hopefully get at least your id back.

  2. But this is Japan?! You can just leave your wallet in a train and go collect it a week later 😳

  3. My AirPods Pro fell out of my pocket on the train, location shows where they are but the cops can’t do anything as it wasn’t technically “theft”…I ran through all my options with them but even if they could pinpoint the house and confront the person who took them, the person could just lie and say they didn’t have them, that would be it. The gps location isn’t good enough to get a warrant. Pretty disappointing, I feel your pain.

  4. I like the fact that the police are saying they can’t randomly harass people on the street, yet when I walk to my own station….

  5. Suck to be so close but so far from getting it back.

Isn’t there a button you can press to make the AirTag beep loudly? Bit late to mention but

  6. What kind of iPhone do you have? If it’s an 11 or newer you should be able to find its precise location using the Find My app. It will tell you to go left or right and tell you how many meters you are away from it. When you are less than 0.5 meters away your phone will vibrate and you can play a sound from the AirTag.

  7. Sounds like a pretty risky move to leave the bag outside, but still a bit disappointed in Japan here. You can do better.

  8. It’s easy to think, this is Japan, so safe! Don’t tempt fate, there’s always someone who will take advantage.

  9. Man, I’ve seen the bag outside thing but I didn’t expect documents to be kept in it and not just the ¥.

Start scrounging around garbage drops and shit. If it’s not moving they didn’t yeet it into a river. Before you do that cancel your credit card though.

  10. I never leave my bag anywhere, especially if it has my wallet in it. I’m from the hood, so it’s ingrained in me 😂😂 I don’t care how safe people say Japan is, I ain’t leaving my shit .

Live and learn I guess !

  11. I don’t know man, leaving your bag with wallet and ID in it outside just seems like tempting fate. Even if you’re in a country like Japan. I always advise to carry money and ID in a separate little sidebag or wallet in pocket.

  12. That’s incredible, you actually got a cop to spend more than 30 seconds to do actual police work. You got lucky and the cop took time to go with you and help search for it.

I have a friend who got scammed out of more than 3 million yen (basically just stole it from her). She had photos of the guy and secretly took a photo of his license plate when she got suspicious of him. Went to the cops and they basically pressured her just let it go. Wouldn’t even search the license plate.

But what do you expect the cops to do? They went to the place. No sign of the bag because the thief probably took your cash and dumped the wallet in the trash or somewhere.

  13. That’s too bad. Get yourself a small bum bag, or whatever they call them where you’re from, to carry across your chest all the time.

  14. Cant? Wont. Not like police care when profiling random foreigners for absolutely no reason. They just wanna chance catching a japanese red-handed and having a crowd of ppl see them refuse to press charges

  15. My macbook got stolen and Find My Mac pinpointed it to a particular place. Cops wouldn’t do anything besides tell me of all the things I couldn’t do (knocking, putting a sign up, anything).

  16. The app for air tag will tell you when you are getting close and even point you in the right direction. The location of the tag works BETTER when there are tons of people because it uses other phones to help locate it via bluetooth (it is all encrypted of course).

How come you could not find it? It is literally pointing with an arrow and pulsing faster when you get closer. It is super precise – contradictory to your title. I have had this happen to me but in my case nobody stole anything, I just forgot my bag at shibuya and luckily nothing got stolen although I found it was not where I first left it.

  17. The spirit of Japan lives. That said, what are you thinking leaving a wallet somewhere and expecting it to be there when you return? This is Japan but it doesn’t mean it is 100% honest.
