Wanting to move to japan. 1 year of experience in SWE, Japanese citizenship and JLPT N1

Hello,

I’m considering relocating to Japan next year. I’ll complete my degree this year, and I’ve been working as a DevOps Engineer for the past year. I hold Japanese citizenship and passed the JLPT N1 in December 2022.

While I understand that gaining more experience before moving might be advisable, I want to move as soon as possible. I’d be content with around 3.5~4M¥, as long as the position offers me opportunities for learning and growth. Between 2021 and 2022, I spent time in Japan working part-time amidst the pandemic, and I absolutely loved my time there.

Is my plan viable? If so, any advices for the job-hunting process? If not, why?

Thank you in advance.

  2. You should connect with hiring agencies in Japan. They’ll be better positioned to give you realistic job and salary expectations.

Yes your plan is viable. You have N1 and have Japanese citizenship, so getting a visa won’t be an issue. If I was you, I’d probably just jet on over to Japan after you finish your degree, live in a sharehouse and try to find something. I’d try contracting recruiters and recruiting agencies when you’re in Japan/almost done with your degree and you’ll probably be able to find work since by then you’d have 2 years exp and you your degree. Best of luck!

  4. Just want to advise that “learning and growth” are typically not associated with companies (these are likely to be Japanese domestic companies) that pay you 3.5M to 4M JPY a year. You may fall behind in terms of “learning and growth”. Are you aware of this?
