What are some of the best places to buy frozen meals in Japan?

I like having frozen meals in the freezer for days when I don’t feel like cooking, though I’m getting sick of the stuff I can get at the konbini (spaghetti bolognese, fried rice type stuff). Are there any other stores that have selections of frozen food you enjoy?

  1. Supermarkets have a larger selection than convenience stores.

Picard, a French frozen dishes company, has a presence in Japan, and a few stores. They’re fairly decent.

A google search for “冷凍食品” should give you a lot of options, but I have no recommendations.

Edit: I’ve also tried some of what [Royal Deli](https://www.shoproyal.jp/shop/c/c10/) offers at their small Tokyo Food Show store in Futako-Tamagawa, and they were quite good.

  2. Supermarkets have a much larger selection. Although frozen “meals” aren’t really much of a thing in Japan. People who want a whole meal just get a fresh bento I guess since they’re so easily accessible I assume there isn’t much demand/necessity to stock up on frozen meals. Unless it’s something simple like just pasta or a pizza. Frozen foods are mostly the individual components of a meal, so like fried rice, karaage, small vegetable based side dishes, gyoza, French fries, etc. sold separately instead of together portioned out for a single meal like a tv dinner.

  3. “Big” Napolitan frozen pasta.
Okonomiyaki also surprisingly pretty good, usually I heat it on the frying pan after microwaving it.
Ajinomoto fried rice also good pick.

And best would be frozen gyozas.

All of them can be obtained in supermarkets.
Try to visit supermarkets, you will find a lot of frozen stuff there.

  4. Gyomu super has a ton but check out Maruetsu as they have a stupidly huge frozen food section.

  5. +1 supermarkets

But do you reach for frozen because others aren’t available? My nearest Seiyu is open 24h (according to Google, but I haven’t tried to shop in the middle of the night) – in addition to frozen sides, I know I can count on Seiyu having plenty of cold grab and go sushi (and my favorite chawanmushi that’s refrigerated, but still good for several days at home)

  6. If you have enough space in your fridge, delivery service called Nosh is decent. It’s full meal frozen like TV dinner, low carb with vegetables, and tastes quite good.

  7. I’ve been using [nosh.jp](https://nosh.jp) for about 18 months. It is pricey, but it is better than konbini stuff and healthier with more variety than supermarket stuff. It’s not the greatest, but it’s fine for what it is. My only complaint is that portions are tiny for the cost, but I’m a fatass and I need to eat less anyway so it is actually better for me.

  8. Costco.
    Gyomu super.

    Recently discovered frozen udon.
    Comes out perfect microwaved.
Add some puchi udon sauce, some gochujang…quick and easy.
