Would Kyushu or Hokkaido be better for an October trip?

My mom and I will be returning to Japan in October for my birthday, day 1 we land in Narita and will spend two days in Tokyo before heading off to our next destination, but im just torn on which place would be better to see this time of year. Last time we were in Japan, we did the golden triangle, briefly went to Fukuoka(briefly being like an hour to visit the hard rock) but other than that we didn’t touch Kyushu or Hokkaido.

Also open to other parts of Honshu as well. I’m big into anime, museums, history, culture and good food. We aren’t massive outdoors people, my mom also needs a double knee replacement so we won’t be hiking a lot or going on any mountain trails. I do want to get to an onsen and traditional Japanese inn at some point on the trip as well.

TLDR: Nice places to see in fall?

  1. Based on a quick search, Hokkaido should have fall foliage in October, but Kyushu doesn’t yet.
