Itinerary check: Tokyo – Fujikawaguchiko – Takayama – Kyoto – Hiroshima – Kagoshima – Yakushima – Osaka – Tokyo

With help from all the great advice and recommendations on this sub, we have finally finished our itinerary.

Me and my partner are leaving for Japan (first time) in a couple of weeks and would love some feedback on the things planned in the itinerary! Flying in from a 13-hour flight, the 4th of October at 9am (Narita).

If anyone has any food/shop/sightseeing recommendations, let us know :))

Day 1: Tokyo
– Arriving at Narita in the morning and taking the Narita Express Train to hotel in Shinjuku
– Exploring Shinjuku, might also head up to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Planned an easy day, because of the possible jetlag

Day 2: Tokyo
Shinjuku / Shibuya / Harajuku
– Meiji Shrine
– Harajuku wijk
– Shibuya Crossing
– Takeshita street
– Golden Gai
– Omoide Yokochō

Day 3: Tokyo
Asakusa / Ueno
– Sensō-ji tempel & Asakusa Shrine
– Nakamise-dori Street
– Tokyo Skytree

Day 4: Tokyo
Ginza
– teamLab Planets TOKYO
– Tsukiji Outer Market
– Explore the shops in Ginza

Day 5: Tokyo
Shimokitazawa
– Explore the neighbourhood

Day 6: Tokyo
Roppongi
– Nakameguro

Day 7: Tokyo -> Fujikawaguchiko
– Free day planned
– Heading to Fujikawaguchiko in the afternoon with the Highway bus
– Settle in hotel

Day 8: Fujikawaguchiko
– Hire a bike and go around Lake Kawaguchiko
– Mt. Fuji Panoramic Ropeway
– Chureito Pagoda

Day 9: Fujikawaguchiko -> Takayama
– Leaving for Takayama in the morning and arriving in the afternoon
– Will probably go to an onsen and have a nice dinner

Day 10: Takayama
– Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine
– Miyagawa Morning Markets
– Sanmachi Historical Houses neighbourhood
– Hida Minzoku Mura Folk Village

Day 11: Takayama -> Kyoto
– Leave for Kyoto in the morning
– Ginkaku-ji
– Philosopher’s Path
– Murin-an

Day 12: Kyoto
– Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
– Iwatayama Peak Rest House
– Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple
– Kinkaku-ji

Day 13: Kyoto
– Daytrip to Nara

Day 14: Kyoto
– Hōkan-ji Temple
– Sannenzaka

– Gion (part one)

Day 15: Kyoto -> Hiroshima
– Fushimi Inari Pathway
– Gion (part two)
– Leaving for Hiroshima in the afternoon and have some dinner in Hiroshima

Day 16: Hiroshima -> Kagoshima
– Travel to Miyajima early in the morning
– Itsukushima-shrine
– Ropeway to Shishiiwa & Mount MIsen Observatory, walk back down
– Explore city of Miyajima & eat dinner
– Return to hotel and take train to Kagoshima

Day 17: Kagoshima -> Yakushima
– Ferry to Miyanoura Port
– Go snorkeling and explore some beaches

Day 18: Yakushima
– Shiratani Unsui Gorge

Day 19: Yakushima
– Yakushima Island Tour

Day 20: Yakushima
– River Kayaking
– Explore Miyanoura

Day 21: Yakushima -> Osaka
– Flying to Osaka in the afternoon and arriving in the early evening
– Eating dinner at Dotonbori

Day 22: Osaka
– Osaka Castle
– (Umeda Sky Building)
– America-Mura
– Kuromon Ichiba Market
– Sennichimae Doguyasuji Shopping Street
– Shinsekai Market

Day 23: Osaka -> Tokyo
Unsure wether to stay in Osaka until the evening and leave for Tokyo, or go to Tokyo early in the morning and have some more time in Tokyo

Day 24: Tokyo
Fly back in the morning.

  1. I’m doing a similar route and put 2 Tokyo days between Fuji and Takayama because I hate long drives (though 1 day is enough, just so you don’t drive 7 hours)
