I am moving to Japan on a job hunting visa next month so I am unemployed but I earned a salary for a better part of this year and last year. When I apply for NHI, do I provide my tax documents from the 2022 year? Does the United States share my tax information with Japan? How does Japan verify my income?

For all intents and purposes in Japan you’re considered as having no income for the year prior to your arrival.

Yes, there is a tax treaty… But that only applies after you’ve moved here.
