What’s a popular/famous place in Japan that you surprisingly still haven’t been to?

My circle of friends are mainly people who like anime so going to Akihabara is something I do often. But in my 5 years living in Tokyo, I still haven’t been to a maid cafe. And the stories I hear again and again about having overpriced tasteless food makes me wanna go less lol. I still will plan to go at least once if I ever decide to move out of Japan.

Other than that, probably a Sumo wrestling match.

How about you?

  1. 10 years, no maid cafe either and no interest.

Also never ascended Tokyo Tower or the SkyTree (but I love the Shinjuku Gov Building Obesrvation deck and the Mori Tower Observation deck).

    Never been to USJ.

  2. Still haven’t been to Himeji castle. For Japan’s most famous castle, it’s in a pretty random place.

  3. Universal Studio, because it’s just there and I ain’t queueing for 3 hours for a 3 minute ride.

  4. The day I arrived in Japan my host family asked where I wanted to go, and I said the only thing I knew about Japan at the moment- Hiroshima.

23 years later and I still haven’t been. The city anyway, I’ve been to the prefecture

  5. I’ve never stayed anywhere near Mt. Fuji, and have only really seen it from the Shinkansen, and a couple of other FAR away places (one of them being Suwa in Nagano prefecture, where I used to live).

Edit: I just remembered that I did go to Fuji-Q Highlands, which I suppose is quite near. That said, I would still like to make an overnight stay in the area at some point.

  6. Yep, maid cafe for me as well. I’ve considered it quite a few times – going alone, going with friends, going with my girlfriend … but in the end, I’ve always arrived at the conclusion that I’d rather do something else. I would only do it because it’s something you’re expected to do if you’re in Japan, and I have no true interest in it anyway.

  7. Aren’t sumo wrestling matches surprisingly hard to get tickets for? If that’s the case I really don’t blame the majority of people for not getting a chance to go

  8. One day I’ll go to Gifu to the knife fair. I don’t need any knives and my wife has zero interest in Gifu, but it’s a bucket list thing.

  9. 3 years living in Sapporo and never went to Hakodate. Now I moved out a couple years ago and will probably have to wait a couple more till I can go to Hakodate 🙁

  10. Kichi Kichi Omurice, maid cafes, Disney Land/Sea, Mt. Fuji, Hiroshima Atomic Bomb Dome, Tokyo Dome

Too many to count and I just listed things off the top of my head
