Hi, Tokyo expat here.
I’m moving to a new place that is set rn for 100mb. I need about 1G because I work from home etc. My current SoftBank 1gb plan would require me to ask permission from my new landlords— they’ve asked for pictures of what they will do to the walls in order to install the new high-speed-capable plug.. and I’m not sure I want to go through the hassle of getting SoftBank consumer services to send me these pics, or if they’d even know what I’m talking about.
The customer service offered that maybe I should get SoftBank air but I haven’t seen a lot of happy reviews. Docomo apparently has another air-like system that seems to be a little better but I was wondering if any of you guys could share their experience using home 5G solutions or literally any insight at all. This is all very stressful lol
Thanks!

If you actually want some resemblance of 1Gbit service, fiber is the only way to go. Even 100M VDSL is going to be better than LTE/5G based solution.
For example of work where line is fed through the aircon duct, there are some pics here: https://hikari-mama.com/manshon-kyoka
edit: the site above links to a pdf on NTT-EAST website, which should be “authoritative” enough for your building management: https://www.ntt-east.co.jp/iwate/sekoujirei.pdf
We had pocket wifi/5g solution while waiting for our fibre to get installed. It said unlimited but after 100gb (like 3 days through some magic) it got throttled to less than dialup speeds. My big advice is to avoid the big 3 telcos for anything and be patient now rather than livid later.
