Fukuoka van rental insurance

Hey guys,

Me and my partner are heading to Japan in October and we’ll be renting a van for a few days to explore around Kyushu.

Was hoping someone might be able to help me understand what kind of insurance cover this company is actually offering? I’ve read through it a couple times but hoping someone can help me with the layman 🙂

We’re hoping to get some form of comprehensive insurance but unsure if that’s what these guys are offering….

  1. Not included (translated):

    * Compensation in excess of insurance coverage
    * Property damage deductible
    * Vehicle Compensation Exemption ※In the case of self-inflicted accidents and hit-and-run accidents, the full vehicle repair cost will be borne.
    * Non-operation charge
    * Business compensation fee (car suspension compensation)
    * forwarding expenses

    The policy limit is 100000円(10000 USD approx), so if you total the rental, you are on the hook for the excess.

    I would get supplementary insurance through your carrier in your home country if possible, in addition to this insurance.

  2. Travel insurance often includes motor vehicle benefits (sometimes for a fee). I would make sure the cover on your travel is adequate (and ignore the coverage provided by the rental company). Often the ‘cover’ is not insurance at all, but just a warranty guarantee offering limited benefits. Plenty of people have been found out by relying on rental companies excluding ‘ordinary’ road accidents or severely limiting the coverage (as described here by another user, this company limits the ‘cover’ to $10k, making you liable for any additional amounts).
