Regarding travel with a loose itinerary in Chugoku & Shikoku without reserving all the accommodations in advance; and looking for organized lists of shrines/temples/museums around the region

I’ve been planning to go to Chugoku & Shikoku from late Sep to early Oct. Though after weeks of research, there’re still questions waiting to be answered at the moment. Hope someone can share your insights, much thanks.

Q1. I plan to have a looser itinerary. Have certain spots I want to visit in mind, but will leave myself enough time to just wander around. Therefore I don’t want to reserve all the accommodations in advance.

Capsule hotels or net/manga cafes are OK for me, maybe business hotels if I’m staying in the same area for more than a day.

My concern is that:

=>Will it be much harder to find a room available for walk-ins? Chugoku & Shikoku are not the most crowded areas as I know, plus I’m not going there in high season.

=>For cheaper accommodations like what mentioned above, will the price be apparently higher for walk-ins?

In short, I’m not sure whether it’ll be too “risky” to travel there without booking all the accommodations in advance. But if this is somehow doable without getting myself into too many troubles (at least for the less crowded areas unlike Tokyo or Osaka), it might change the way I plan my itinerary in the future.

Or should I just book the rooms even if it’s just a day or two in advance (when I decided where to go and stay), and cancel the reservations if I want to? Don’t want to cause troubles to the locals though.

Q2. Places that I’m interested the most are shrines/temples and museums. There’re tons of related info here and there, usually they’re organized and presented based on regions.

The point is what I want is so specific, yet the related info are scattered in like hundreds of websites and webpages. It’s frustrating to go through all the pages, picking up every bit of info I targeted, and am not even sure whether I missed sth or not.

What I need are like full lists of shrines/temples as well as public/private museums of each cities/regions. The local government or the federations of respective religions should have those info, though I cannot find them on their offical websites.

Does anyone know if there’re such lists? Or is there any sites that present their info based on categories of spots but not regions?
