Made a Chrome Extension to make it easier to learn Japanese through Subtitles!

みなさん、おはよう!

I wanted to share a project that a friend and I have been working on! We’ve been learning Japanese for the past 2 years and wanted to make a tool to make it easier to learn through the subtitles any Japanese show you’re watching. Over the past couple months we’ve built Iago to help you immerse in your favorite TV shows! ([https://getiago.com](https://getiago.com/))

➤ 🧩 Download the Extension Here: [https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/iago-learn-japanese/idpifncfikefjiopoiagefcmcibmglpe](https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/iago-learn-japanese/idpifncfikefjiopoiagefcmcibmglpe)

➤ 🦜 Website: [https://getiago.com](https://getiago.com/)

➤ 📺 🍿 We currently supported on Netflix, YouTube, Disney+ (and more coming soon…)

➤ 👀 You can hover over any word to see its definition

>We’ll surface part of speech, JLPT difficulty, inflection / conjugation information for you.

➤ 🧠 Automatic flashcard deck curation

>Flashcard deck making is tedious, so we’re trying to make the process easier for you.
>
>Iago *automatically* keeps track of the words / grammar you’ve seen before and includes custom spaced-repetition quizzes for you to help recall the content you’ve seen before.

➤ 🍾 We also keep track of **grammar**!

>We know how important grammar is especially in Japanese (with all its conjugations and specific sentence structures), so we’ve also built a way to view all the grammar structures you’ve seen so far as well!

>
>We’ll soon build quiz and progress tracking tools we’ve done for words onto grammar.

🐛 Expect Mistakes

We’re still learning Japanese and while we’ve put a lot of effort into making our parser accurate, we’ll still make mistakes. If you see a mistranslation / wrong definition for a word, *flag an issue* with the flag button and we’ll try to get back to you soon!

🤝 Give Us Feedback

This is only the start for us! Our goal is to make it easier to learn Japanese through your favorite TV shows (and soon other forms of entertainment, like songs, games, books, websites).

We’ll be using Discord to post updates, talk about our favorite shows, and host events! We’re continuously building so we’d love to hear from you live on what features you all want next! Come talk to us! We’re learners too 🙂

We’d very much appreciate feedback! Looking forward to hear what you all think about Iago 🚀

Thanks for reading!
よろしくお願いします,
Alex 🙂

  1. Additionally, we’ll be giving out **1 month of a Japanese Snack Box** to 10 random users who sign up and use the product during our *first two weeks of launch*!
    *To be eligible:*
    1. Use the product and *View 10 Words*
    2. *Do 1 Quiz* on our website (app.getiago.com)
We’ll be cross-referencing this on our backend and picking users from there!
*More details are available here:* [https://coda.io/@iago/iago-help-center/public-beta-giveaway-8](https://coda.io/@iago/iago-help-center/public-beta-giveaway-8)

  2. is there a way to disable english & hiragana display? i just want the original japanese subtitles with the option to hover words if necessary.

if i can’t do this with iago can someone point me towards some other extension that allows me to do that?

  3. I’m digging it, like the idea so far!

I do have a couple things to say:

    1. I’m unsure if this is a bug or a feature request, but considering your big emphasis on parsing, could you perhaps consider converting “set phrases” such as this into one unit vs different words? EG: [https://pasteboard.co/ggR9UebFbV4i.png](https://pasteboard.co/ggR9UebFbV4i.png) – 気にする instead of 気+に+する. Kireicake and even Jisho already do this to a large extent, so I think it would be a great addition.
Sorry for the black screen, Netflix and its protections.
    2. Would you consider deleting content from parenthesis and brackets during parsing? I do this a lot with custom Crunchyroll subs, mostly to just delete character names and lines that are actually never said by characters; I do this with notepad and opening SRTs, but perhaps the parser could automatically “supress” them? That would be cool!

Great work! Thanks for sharing with the community!

  4. I’ve only used this for one video and it seems really neat, well done. For the “Review Words” page I noticed it automatically added words without me selecting them, but it didn’t add all words from the video. How does the extension determine which words to track? Also do you plan on adding sentences the word appears in to the “Review Words” tab to aid in sentence mining?

  5. OMG this is absolutely amazing! Will definitely use it, it will for sure help out a lot on my kanji studies! Also it would be absolutely awesome if you could make this compatible with Crunchyroll and any other anime streaming sites

  6. I just tried this out and it works great! The popup appears much quicker and smoother than Language Reactor, and I appreciate the grammar inclusion. Just a suggestion: instead of using romaji for the pronounciation of the word on the popup, kana can be used instead, like in the dictionary entries on the website.

  7. Following, just so i could go back to this post tomorrow morning 🙂 good job guys!
