Recruiting in Japan

I work for a western video game developer and we’re looking for a Marketing / Communications professional in Japan with native japanese proficiency and business level English but am having trouble getting applicants. I posted the job on Indeed and Wantedly, and haven’t gotten much there either. I’m looking for agencies now but I’m at a loss of where and how to find qualified applicants. I’ve been researching different job boards and they all charge money, which isn’t an issue but if I’m going to spend money I want to make sure I’m posting the role on the right websites. Any recommendations, referrals, advice anything, would be appreciated. I’ve been reaching out to candidates on linkedin with very few responses, looking to get a Line account and do a sponsored post. Also my company is a pretty big / known games company, so there’s plenty of brand recognition, just not sure where to go from here.

  1. Find recruiters who specialize in your industry and talk to them. Prepare questions to vet them and select one to work with based on their expertise filling roles similar to yours. It’s more about the actual consultant than the company. Be prepared to pay a high placement fee. You may have some room for negotiation by promising exclusivity.* Furnish them with all the background information you can. It’s a partnership. *Don’t spam the JD out to 15 different companies, then everyone will give it minimal effort and the search will drag on and on.

  2. You’ll get a lot more applicants if you post in Japanese. Don’t cheap out on recruiting costs—the right person can make a huge impact on your company culture and profitability.

Either way, I highly advise testing all applicants’ language ability, including their ability to understand oral instructions and write out complex ideas. Make sure you test in both languages, and test the job-specific jargon.
