Using Grammar Textbooks

I just got “A Dictionary of Basic Japanese Grammar,” and 30 pages in I’ve been exposed to a lot of information. How do you guys categorize and keep track of all of that info? Thank you!

  1. I had the same problem. So I created flash cards and just went through them everyday. But it took me days and weeks to create them.

  2. Do whatever you find useful or enjoyable – naturally it is probably intended to be used to lookup grammar when you see it in the wild. At the same time, it has plenty of Japanese sentences to generally practice reading. There are also Anki decks with flashcards already made for these grammar books if you want to go that route.

  3. I read it and took notes, breaking down how to use each piece of grammar. Then I used that simply as a reference.

I found the best way to make it stick is to just keep writing, keep a journal and you’ll naturally find yourself using grammar to say what you need to say. Over long periods of time of consistent study, you’ll naturally ingrain it into your head and those grammar points will come out unconciously.
