Hiking AND Camping Trails

Hey everyone, I’ve been searching for a bit and haven’t come across exactly what I’m looking for so I’m hoping someone can help.

I’ve already looked through all the resources [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/japanlife/comments/n4kub8/overnight_hiking_and_camping_in_japan_that_isnt/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3) but I’m still hungry for more knowledge. Does anyone have any resources for hiking trails that allow camping (either an actual site or wild camping) on or along them? Does such a thing exist?

Thanks for any info.

  1. Wild camping isnt legal in Japan due to the law regarding federal parks, forests and wildlife. People still do it though. It means you wont find places where its allowed unfortunately.

  2. Hiking route books will tell you about camping areas on the routes they describe.

Wild camping on beaches is generally acceptable. And if you arrive late and leave early, many other places will not be an issue, if they are public land. Of course you could get booted, but maybe nobody cares if you’re gone early enough.

  3. A nice hiking and camping train is Mt Takanosu in Okutama. There is a 避難小屋 on the west side of the summit (along with a water source nearby, although it dries up in winter) and people often set up tent next to it, even though it’s technically illegal.

Otherwise many mountain huts also offer a camping ground. Mt Kumotori, Mt Kita, etc.

  4. I do not know which region of Japan you want to do camping but you can look into the app called YAMAP and check along the routes if they have some huts icon. If so, then you can camp over there and most of the camping sites near the mountain is not autocamping as the vehicles cannot reach there. Like a recommendation, there is a mountain called 武奈ヶ岳 in Shiga prefecture where you can camp at a 峠 with amazing view of Biwa lake. That campsite is called 北平峠
