Japan Retirement

Is it possible for a US citizen to retire in Japan. And if so, how much would they have to earn annually? Thanks.

  1. Do you speak Japanese ? Even if you could work a way to find a visa, and health insurance, living long term in Japan without speaking Japanese would be extremely hard, or cost a huge amount of money.

  2. I was born here to Japanese immigrants so my Japanese is very good and I wouldn’t consider moving there for retirement. Japanese people divide the world into two types of people- Japanese nationals and everyone else. You will always be an outsider. Very few people that you come across will speak English well enough to carry on a conversation. You will have trouble navigating every day tasks like post office, doctors visitors, grocery store runs etc. due to language and cultural barriers. Nothing there is the same as here. You will be lonely, frustrated and feel ostracized. Really really not ideal.
