After years of loyal service it is time to retire my old iphone and upgrade to an iPhone 15. The phone is from AU. It was fully paid off years ago. But I dont want to visit AU. It is so stressful dealing with their 20 page contracts and confusing traps and options. I just want to buy a new phone from the apple shop and transfer the service from my old phone without the ordeal of the AU inquisition. Normally it would be a simple matter of transferring the sim card but the newest phones are eSim and the older iPhone X has a physical sim. Has anyone done this? physical to esim wihout carrier involvement?

iphone 15 has a sim card tray outside the US, so you can buy it directly from Apple and pop your current sim into it. You may need to find a new APN profile, but that’s about it.
Out of interest – how much do you pay a month? If you’re still on an old contract you may be able to get a better deal than the old 5-8000yen a month prices that were common before.
If your old phone is new enough, you can transfer the cell contract from SIM to eSIM on the old phone and them transfer eSIM to the new phone.
Actually, I think Apple Store employees would be happy to help you,
