I’m tring to speed up my furusato nozei purchase this year, as it is almost October. I’ve been receiving the same gifts for years, and it’s starting to feel a bit repetitive, so I’m looking to change things up a bit.
Is there any gift that stood out to you? It could be anything, ranging from a few thousand yen to a few hundred thousand yen. Cost-effectiveness isn’t the top priority; I’m more interested in something that pleasantly surprised you or “brought a smile to your face”.

Frozen bread was good for quick mornings.
If you drink beer that is always good too, as are the many nihon-shu options.
Sorbet
If you’ve been doing the same thing for years it must be good. What did you used to get?

We try and get something new each year. Winners are often fruits or alcohol. Meat can be hit or miss. We got rice this year which we enjoyed as it was more local types as opposed to generic koshihikari and nipponbare. The rule of thumb is to get something an area is famous for such as apples from Nagano cities etc
We’ve near tried any of the experience type ones, but most people we know don’t recommend them as they often have lots of conditions that make them difficult to use.
Got some katanas suggested to me. That was pretty cool. Not in my price range, but cool.
Also, you can pick a city with good metalworking and get some knives!
