Contracting your own internet providers in “free internet” apartments?

I’m looking for apartments right now, but a lot of the most affordable and best options come with “free internet”. I play FPS games, so I know the internet won’t be good enough.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience with contracting their own separate internet in these types of apartments. I called and asked about it and they said it’s typically okay to get your own internet as long as there’s no damage to the building (i.e. drilling new holes).

Is there usually damage to the building with internet construction or is it pretty easy to find companies that can do it damage free?

Thanks!

  1. It all depends on which network the building is wired with, typically NTT, AU, or Nuro. Your choice of ISPs will be limited to whoever offers services via that physical network.

  2. You’ll see when you try the internet there. In my experience, I could barely access my emails so I got my own subscription.

  3. My free internet is a fairly good gigabit. Got my own router though because the provided one was a bottleneck.

Don’t dismiss it until you visit the place. If the internet is provided, you should be able to try it.

  4. How do you know it won’t be good enough? Mine that comes with the building and is bundled in the rent is lightning fast, haven’t had any problems streaming media or games so far. My building is about 10 years old.
